Romeoville, Ill. - Two first half goals for the Lewis University men's soccer team were able to hold up in a 2-1 win over Illinois-Springfield Sunday (Oct. 29) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal match at Lewis Stadium.
The Flyers (12-4-1) got on the board first when a hand ball in the box led to a penalty kick, which
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) converted for his fifth goal of the season in the game's 19th minute.
Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) then tallied his 12th goal of the year on a pass from
Edgar Garcia (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) in the 35th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
It was the sixth game-winning goal on the season for Mueller and he has scored the past five game-winning goals for the Flyers.
The Prairie Stars (8-8-1) answered in the 38th minute when Fernando Galdeano scored, with assists from Harry Hiscock and Steven Albers.
Lewis had a 17-10 shot advantage for the game and took 10 corner kicks to two from Illinois-Springfield.
Philip Huang (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) made four saves in goal for Lewis.
With the top two seeds losing Sunday, the No. 3 seed Flyers are the top seed remaining in the GLVC Tournament.
They will be taking on No. 7 seed Southern Indiana Friday (Nov. 3) at either 6 PM or 8:30 PM ET. The game will take place at Carroll Stadium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
