2013 Player Diaries

December 23, 2013

Hello and Merry Christmas Flyer Fans!

My name is Jenni Mueller and I am a Junior Defensive Specialist majoring in Elementary Education.

The semester and 2013 season have both come to an end, leaving us all a lot to be proud of.  Although we may not have gone as far as we all wanted, this team overcame so much on and off the court this season.  We truly were a family and supported each other through everything.  I am so happy I can call every single person on this team not only my teammate, but also my friend.

I would have to say my favorite part of this season was our trip to Hawaii.  Although we may not have played as well as we would have liked there was so much team chemistry and bonding that took place that really helped us later on in the season be so successful.

My least favorite part of the season was getting hurt, but with my injury I had so much support and care from my teammates that really helped me to keep pushing each day.

I am truly proud to be a part of this amazing team! Sadly, we do loose one senior this year, Vivian Pritz (or the old lady as we like to call her,) and she will be missed so much next year! The other 20 of us will be returning and I am sure everyone else, like me, cannot wait to get back in the gym and working for next season in the spring!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Love always,
Jenni Mueller  #10

Hello fellow Flyer Fans!!!

My name is Morgan Cebula and I am currently a sophomore middle hitter majoring in criminal justice and psychology.

Today, we begin our journey off to regionals where we will face Ferris State in the first round. We faced Ferris in the first round of regionals last year as well, that unfortunately ended our season but this year I don’t think Ferris knows what they have coming…literally! We are going into this match a whole new team and trying out an entirely new lineup that we have yet to use this year. This is truly what I believe is the best part about this Lewis team. We have so much versatility and depth on the court and on our bench that I don’t think any other team would dare to try this and, nonetheless, be successful at it like I know that we will.

This group of women has such a fire and such a fight to win that we have surpassed everyone’s expectations this year. Like some of the other girls mentioned, losing every starter other than Leigh coming into this year and losing Amy unexpectedly, I really don’t think that anyone could have imagined that we would accomplish this much. It just goes to show that it is not experience that makes champions but hard work and dedication to one common goal. Even if we do not walk away this weekend with a ring and a ticket to the elite eight I know that I have never played, or been given the experience, to work with teammates that want something so much, and even if things don’t go quite as planned or the ball doesn’t fall in their favor, never let it bring them down but use it to fuel their fire to rise.

Well I hope you can tune in and keep tabs on how we are doing this weekend pray for us and cheer us on as we pave our road to victory!!!

Love always your Lewis Flyer,

Hello Flyer Fans,

Hi my name is Katie Fuerst and I’m a junior outside hitter currently majoring in Sports Management and a minor in marketing.

This past weekend we had the honor to host conference tournament. I wouldn’t have thought if you asked me last year graduating five starting seniors we would be this successful. I’m more than lucky to be apart of such a loving, caring, and talented team. Looking back on this weekend the tournament didn’t go as well as we all would have wanted it too. I have to say it has taught me a lot about not taking anything for granted. Being apart of this team is a privilege and without this incredible family I honestly don’t know where I would stand.

The first day of the conference tournament was Friday and we knew we’d beat UMSL earlier in the season but when it comes to conference everyone plays their heart out. That is exactly what we did and we earned the chance to go to the semi-final match the next day. Truman State is new in our conference and unfortunately when we played them our first home game of the season I had to go home with strep throat and a fever. I just remember sitting on my couch watching on the computer thinking to myself we can be the best team in this conference. Even though we fell short this weekend I still honestly believe that we are the best team in this conference.

I ask myself after this weekend how could a team that has so much talent and passion for the game fall short? I know in my heart that every single player on and off the court wanted to win conference. I knew that everyone had the passion and strength to win the whole thing. It was just a matter of it not being the right time and you can’t blame yourself. In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that. It takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And lastly, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your teammates. Even with all of these things put together if you don’t win, how can you lose? Lewis Women’s Volleyball team is hoping to get that bid to regionals and I know we will do anything in our power to make sure that this isn’t the end and we will keep going.

Love always,
Katie Fuerst #14

Hey Flyer Fans!

My name is Maddie Seliga and I am a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri. I wear jersey number 20 and I play right side. I am currently majoring in nursing here at Lewis.

Two weeks ago in our match verses Rockhurst, I sprained my ankle. Although I could not play when we traveled to UIS and McKendree, I had a fantastic time. The energy on the court and the bench was amazing the whole weekend. I have never been part of a team that exudes this kind of energy and passion. This weekend we went to five in both of our matches. I love how fearless our team goes into the fifth set. I know there is no doubt in my teammates’ minds that we can and will win. We always say that we are a unit from the first person on the court to last person on bench and it couldn’t be more true! I’m happy to say that I have healed quickly and I’m excited to start my first week back in action.

Love Your Lewis Flyer,

Hello!

My name is Kelly Brennan, and this is my first semester here as a transfer student. I spent my last two years up in Boston at Tufts University, but am originally from about 30 minutes north of here. I'm currently a Communications major with a minor in Public Relations.

Transferring here was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but it also has proven to be one of the best. Due to some "difficulties," I am currently ineligible to play this season. Starting over your junior year of college presents its own challenges, but joining a team not being able to play, ride on the bus, or stay in hotels with them has truly been mentally and emotionally taxing.

My first few weeks were pretty rough. As I sat alone in my bed watching live stats of my teams' first test in Hawaii, tears rolled down my cheeks. I began questioning my decision to transfer as well as my future on this team and with volleyball. I felt out of place, like I didn't belong. I no longer saw myself as a member of the team, but an outsider looking in. It was the second week of school, and the only 20 friends I had were 4,000 miles away. I had no one to talk to, eat lunch, or practice with. However, less than a couple hours after my minor breakdown, my phone began vibrating with the most supportive messages I could have ever imagined. They were genuine, encouraging, and, most importantly, non-stop. Within the first two days of their trip, I had heard from every single person and continued to hear from them until they boarded their flight back to Chicago. I took a screenshot of one from my big sister (Kim), printed it out, and tucked it away in the pocket of my binder. It meant more than she ever would have imagined- it was the moment I knew I was going to be okay. I knew I belonged right where I was that I was supposed to be a Flyer. I already felt so loved and accepted and I hadn't known these girls for more than a month.

The day they returned from Hawaii was the happiest day of my time at Lewis thus far (except for maybe the three set sweep of UIndy in their own gym or our most recent victory over nationally ranked Wheeling Jesuit hehe- those were good ones as well). Anyways, I couldn't wait to dive in 100% to this team and everything they believed in. My outlook on life and volleyball had done a complete 360 in a matter of a couple of days. I was going to use this season to become physically and mentally stronger- to increase my volleyball IQ. I'm still learning so many new things everyday. Sometimes I can't believe I've been playing as long as I have with as much as I still have to learn, but it is the most exciting thing in the world. It's like everyday is Christmas!

There are still some hard days, especially the practices before traveling. I start to wonder what I'll be missing on the bus ride or what huge win I'll be celebrating by myself in my dorm room, but it makes me appreciate how lucky I am to even have a spot on this team, to be a part of this family. All I have to do is take out Kim's message to remember how fortunate I am. Playing has been temporarily taken away from me, but it truly has been a blessing in disguise. I'll never take a single chance to step on the court with this team for granted. It makes me the happiest girl around. There isn't a day I go without smiling or laughing, and it's all because of this team- my family.

They say you don't know what you have until it's gone. I just happen to be one of the lucky ones that gets a chance to get back what was taken away from me.

I wake up everyday excited to continue on this wonderful journey with my best friends.

Hi!

My name is Ally Maurer, and I'm a junior from Oviedo, Florida. I wear jersey number 19 and play right side and middle. I am currently majoring in Business Administration and plan on attending Law School after I graduate Lewis.

This is my first year at Lewis, I transferred here from Florida State College in Jacksonville, Florida. Moving completely across the country was a huge decision, but I don't think I could have made a better one. I have been on more volleyball teams than I can remember, but I have never been on a team that has felt more like a family. Every single girl on this team I consider a sister of mine, and they have made moving away from Florida so easy!

On Sunday, we played William Jewell, and got our 11th conference win! Everything really came together for our team today and we had a lot of people come off the bench to help get the W! The energy on our team is amazing, and when we get in the zone, we are completely unstoppable! I love watching our team come together on the court and on the bench to really have a team win.

Right now, I am spending more time watching from the bench as I am working on to shoulder healthy. Two weeks ago I subluxated my shoulder in practice and am awaiting an MRA to make sure I didn't do any permanent damage. Fingers crossed that it is nothing major, but I know no matter what the MRA says I will have the support of my entire Lewis volleyball family as I heal!

This weekend we play Missouri S&T and Drury, two major conference matches. I know that we will be in the gym all week working had to prepare our best game to take on these teams!

Go Flyers,

Hey Flyer Fans!

Red shirt freshman libero Nicole Yuede here. I can say without a doubt that our team this year is one of the best I’ve ever been a part of. We love each other and I feel that our love drives our passion to play. Every person on this team is so unique and special. We have really become a family. A messed up, crazy fun, stone cold pack of weirdos, but a family all the same.

This week we played at the GLVC GLIAC Crossover where we ended up 1-2. We all feel that we have so much more in us. We have yet to play at our full potential so I’m excited to see what the future brings for us and what we can bring to the table when we are all on our game.

The depth of our bench is one of the strongest things about our team. When we win, it’s a full team effort. Every single girl, whether it be on the court or on the bench, contributes to the win. One of the best feelings is when there is a pause in the game for whatever reason and the bench just goes nuts. The energy they bring to the game makes it that much more fun to play.

Our team this year has been full of illness and injury, but we don’t let that stop us. We play for each other, and especially for those who can’t play themselves. One of my biggest inspirations to play is our very own Amy Choi. She inspires me every day. She helps me so much more than people know. I wouldn't be half as good without her. She really is an amazing person. I cannot wait until she gets well and begins to play volleyball again. We all have our battles. Large or small we are there for one another through everything.

I’m eager to see what the rest of the season holds for us. I’m aiming for a conference victory. We are going to win some rings this year. Come join us on our journey to the championship.

Go Flyers!

Hello Flyer Fans,

My name is Bailey Sparkman and I am a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri. I am an outside hitter and I wear #1 on my jersey! Even though transitioning from high school to college and leaving my family back home was really hard, it has so far been a very rewarding experience full of challenges and great memories!

First of all, how many freshman athletes can say the first collegiate tournament they ever played in was in Hawaii?! I had the absolute best time there with my team and my mom even came. We learned so much about our team as a whole and even though we lost 3 out of the 4 games, we definitely used it as a chance to better ourselves. That’s one thing that I LOVE about Lewis volleyball, I’ve never been surrounded by so many people who truly have a desire and passion for the game. The positive attitude that radiates off of this team’s shoulders is contagious, and I love it.

Being a freshman, I am truly honored and blessed to spend every second that I have on the court with five of my other teammates. My club season before coming to Lewis, I had surgery on my rotator cuff in February and was released only a week before season started. Coming into this season at only about 50% of strength was a challenge mentally and physically as I continued doing rehab until I had built up about 75% of my strength. Everything was going smooth and steady until about two weeks ago, I had an awful pain that was much more extreme than any of the typical aches and pops I had felt in my shoulder before. After being evaluated by our trainer, Jen, the team doctor, and an MRI, it has been confirmed that I have retorn my rotator cuff. The odds of having a retear are very low, but somehow, those odds found me!  Even though it’s a tough pill to swallow, I know I did everything I could to recover from my first surgery and the fact of the matter is, I can’t change or control what happened. It is what it is, and I’ll use it to fuel my desire and want to come back at 100% next season! For now, I can train and work to play back row once I do some rehab for a few weeks. The plan is to look at having a second surgery done over Christmas break.

Even though this injury has recently taken me off the court, it has given me a great opportunity to help my teammates from the bench. If you have never experienced the rowdiness and crazy energy from the Lewis Women’s Volleyball bench, you have not lived. Our bench is as much a part of our game as our performance on the court is. Everyone is so involved in the game from the first person on the court to the last person on the bench, and it is so fun to be a part of.

This weekend we have the GLVC crossover and I am so excited to help my team come home with a huge victory.

Until next time,

Love always your Lewis Flyers,
Bailey Sparkman #1

Hello everyone!

My name is Amy Choi and I am a senior libero this year! Unfortunately and quite unexpectedly, due to a recent inflammatory colon condition, I have to medical-redshirt for the 2013 season. I have not been able to attend all practices, games, training, traveling, etc, with the team, but if there is one thing more rewarding than being part of a successful volleyball program here at Lewis, it is having the privilege to be a part of such a supporting, caring group of girls.

Having your senior year taken away from you is hard, to say the least. I went from thinking I am the best libero the world has ever seen - I should try out for the Olympics! to sitting out on the sidelines watching my last possible days of ever playing competitive volleyball pass me by. (Just kidding about the Olympics thing...just trying to get the point across haha). A lot of different emotions overwhelmed me in a very short period of time - anger, bitterness, feeling sorry for myself, wanting to give up. I absolutely love volleyball, but with everyone reminding me of a different perspective, was it worth the expense of my health? For a while when people would ask if I was redshirting, I would smile and nod, but for some reason in the back of my head, I didn't want to come back for a fifth year. I don't know if it was the meds making me crazy or if it was because I was so angry at this stage of my life that I just wanted everything to be over. It was probably the latter. Either way, I thought I was ready to put the knee pads away for good.

All of that changed in one day. Just another ordinary day, one I spent with the team. The only difference was that I was reminded of what things in life truly make me happy.

I was basically M.I.A. for the first two or three weeks after being hospitalized in Hawaii, showing up only to a few games. No practices, no weights, no nothing. Those were some dark times, although I didn't realize it then. I was always in a bad mood, snapping at my parents who deserve it the least. It became a pretty regular cycle - my mom would drop me off for class, I would go and sit through some lecture, not really have any social interaction at all, and then my mom would drive me back home. Sprinkled in there was a whole lot of complaining and a couple pity parties for myself. And I thought this is it. This is my life now and this is my new "every day." I felt I was being defeated by a disease so stupid, and I let it take over my life. But the worst part was that I didn't really care. Eventually, after monitoring my health like night-hawks, my parents agreed to let me come to a few practices, just to be there and see everyone.

And the moment I came back.... oh my goodness I was so happy I probably could have lit up the entire night sky! These girls are my best friends, and just being around this crazy, goofy team makes life a whole lot brighter. It's like I didn't know what I was missing.

Every single practice, Katie Fuerst asks me how I am feeling. Every. Single. Practice. When I see Kimberly Vertin, she gives me the biggest, warmest hugs you could possibly imagine and when I'm lucky, she will even kiss my forehead... Abby Biggs is the sweetest girl in the entire world; I don't think there is a bad bone in her body. I almost want to go to lunch with her parents to ask how they raised such a wonderful girl. Whenever I haven't seen Cassidy Parsons in a while, she does this thing where she says "CHOIIIIII" but in her husky voice and no one else can do it but her and it makes me SO HAPPY.

I could go on and on and on about the team, but I don't want to tell my future kids that the best essay I ever wrote in college was about all the ridiculous things my volleyball teammates do.

Anyway, in these little moments, I realized that a team like this is not something that comes by very often. We truly are a family and everyone supports one another. Every girl wants the team to win, no matter who is out there on the court. Of course there are going to be some rough patches, but none that I can't see us working through. We all have the same goal, and to get there we need all 21 of us, and all 5 or 6 or 7 coaches. Maybe not Nate-dog... Hahahahaha just kidding, Nate-dog, we always need you!!!!

When I first came here, I never expected to be part of such an awesome program and atmosphere. And it's not just this year’s team; it's been like this since I've been here. I've been so spoiled because I've had this for four years now. Sometimes losing something for a while makes you appreciate it more than ever, even if it is a couple years late.

I would be stupid to let go of something as rare and amazing as this.

Hi my name is Carolyn Nojiri I am a freshman libero wearing number 12!  My major is athletic training and I am also a two sport athlete at Lewis, as a member of both the women's volleyball and softball teams.

Unfortunately, this past weekend we suffered our first conference loss.  We battled hard against Southern Indiana but came up short.  But like all great teams, we came back the next day and kicked butt by sweeping Bellarmine!  This team has so much fight in them and they want to win day in and day out, it is a great feeling being a part of this family.

Love always your Lewis Flyers,

Carolyn Nojiri #12 :)

Hey Flyer Fans!

My name is Lauren Stitz and I am a redshirt freshman! This season has been great for me so far, even though it has gone by so fast. My position is an outside hitter and I am #5. I am from the northern suburbs of Indianapolis, but I absolutely love it here at Lewis. I am a double major in marketing and business administration and as of right now I am planning to use my fifth year here to get my MBA.

I would have to say that my favorite moment of this season so far was going to Hawaii for a tournament! It was such an amazing trip with the perfect combination of all of my favorite things: my teammates, volleyball, the beach and ocean, and great memories. It was by far the best trip of my life!

My worst moment this season was when we lost to Southern Indiana because that means we aren’t undefeated in conference anymore. :( But, on a positive note, we came back the next day and beat Bellarmine in three!

My favorite meal so far was our nice dinner in Hawaii on our day off. We all got dressed up and got to eat great food in one of the best states ever. I must say – we are a very good looking team when we get all cleaned up!

For those of you who don’t know, our team has tons of personality which means lots of hilarious and goofy moments. It’s always a great time when we’re together and there are tons of laughs, but I have to say that my favorite funny moment was when we had our prank war. Unfortunately, I was one of the ones who got pranked (I got pizza shoved in my face) but it was still hilarious and we all laughed really hard!

I chose Lewis because once I met the team I instantaneously felt like a part of our LU family. Everyone here is great and the campus is absolutely beautiful no matter what time of the year it is! When I came on all of my visits I knew right away that Lewis was the place for me, it was a perfect match! I absolutely love it here for all the reasons why I chose it and even more. It’s so great to be a part of such a great school and volleyball program. Now that I am a year in, I still don’t think that I could possibly find a reason that would make me want to even consider leaving. The athletic and academic atmospheres are wonderful and it is so easy to make friends anywhere you go on campus.

Go Flyers!

My name is Vivian Pritz and I am a 5th year on this amazing team.

This past weekend (Sept. 28-29) we played Maryville and Missouri St. Louis. Sweeping both teams and being the only undefeated team in conference, we are on a bit of a high and couldn’t be more excited to play McKendree (Oct. 4) and University of Illinois Springfield (Oct. 5) this weekend! With the teams, relentlessness, mindset, and overall will to win, I am eager to see what this season will bring.

FUN FACTS:
Favorite meal: Panera bread, I could eat bread all day, everyday.
Favorite memory: Hawaii, in every aspect Hawaii can be remembered. From the plane ride, matches, random funny moments to the unbelievable scenery.
Favorite food: COOKIES. I am a cookie monster, especially chocolate chip and peanut butter. Or M&M’s.

Hope to see you at the games!!

Hello There Flyer Fans!

It’s Leigh Barea here! I’m a junior setter from Battle Creek, Mich. Even though I’m not one of those Wisconsin cheese heads, I love those Packers! (Thanks Coach for recruiting fellow cheese heads for me.) It is still so weird to me that I am already a junior! It seems like just yesterday I was playing in my first home match as a Lewis Flyer.

Last weekend was the first home matches for many of my teammates when we hosted No. 14 Truman State and Quincy for the first conference matches of the season. And let me tell you, it was one AWESOME weekend! For our home opener, the team played their hearts out and fed off our amazing fans energy as we took down Truman State in four sets! We sure were playing some beautiful and fun volleyball!! On Sunday, we picked up right where we left off and swept Quincy. Such a great first weekend for conference!

We definitely are not satisfied with just one successful weekend, but many more leading us all the way to the conference tournament! We are still making huge strides and improvements as a whole. In no way has this team reached their peak yet. Right now, we just got to keep climbing up the mountain without taking any steps back.

I sure cannot wait to see what this season brings because we sure are going to surprise some people! See you along the ride!! :)

Love always, your Lewis Flyer,

Leigh Barea  #15

Hello Flyer Fans,

My name is Lauren O’Brien and I am a sophomore from Verona, Wisconsin.  We now have three players from Wisconsin, so the team is starting to understand that the Packers are much better than the Bears!  :)

The squad has been extremely busy lately, catching up from our missed classes (most of us would agree that Hawaii was worth missing class for though) and training hard.  The regular season starts this week and we get to play at home!  If you are free this Saturday or Sunday we would love to see you cheering loud in the stands of the Neil Carey Arena!

My favorite part of the season so far was hanging out on the beach in Hawaii and trying to take on some of the huge Hawaiian waves.  More accurately, this was us getting pummeled by waves, knocked over, then pulled onto shore, but it was still a blast despite every crevice of our bodies being full of sand!

The regular season has yet to begin, but our team has already made huge strides forward and became a very tight knit group.  We are going to do big things this year, so make sure you keep an eye out for us!

Love your Lewis Flyer,

Lauren O'Brien

Aloha Flyer Fans!

I hope everyone’s summer and first few weeks of classes have been going well!

Your 2013 Flyers have been busy busy busy! Not only have we gone through our first two weeks of classes but we just got back from our first tournament of the season in Hawaii! We stayed on the island of Oahu on Waikiki Beach.

Unfortunately, we finished with a record of 1-3 but we are taking those losses as a lesson and will be back at it this weekend at the Wisconsin Parkside tournament! While in Hawaii we were fortunate enough to go to Pearl Harbor and see the USS Arizona memorial and learned a lot about the historical event. We also climbed Diamondhead, which was a volcano that erupted a long, long time ago before any of us were even a twinkle in our parents’ eyes.

However, we got to the top and the view was absolutely breathtaking and it started to rain a little bit and we saw a rainbow! It was absolutely beautiful and a wonderful end to our trip. We also got to go to the beach and many people went shopping and hung out with their families who went on the trip as well. However this week we are back to work in the gym and we're very focused on this upcoming weekend, so stay tuned and we hope to see you at our first home game next weekend!

love your Lewis Flyer,

My name is Danica Schreck and I am a freshman this year at Lewis. I am a middle blocker and this season I’ll be wearing number 8. I am from Menasha, Wisconsin. GO PACK GO!!

Currently, I am sitting on a nine hour airplane ride back from Hawaii! The Flyers and I flew to Hawaii this past week to play four volleyball matches.  Although we didn’t do as well as we hoped, we still made lots of great memories and took steps into the right direction in our play.

Even though we were there for volleyball, we still made time to see the beautiful island and enjoy the weather. While in Hawaii, we spent one of our mornings off visiting the Pearl Harbor memorial. On Sunday we got the whole day off! Some of us spent it soaking up the sun, while others spent it exploring the streets of Hawaii. A few of my teammates and I rented a catamaran for a few hours and got to see what the island looked like from the water.  It was amazing. I sure wouldn’t mind going there again! Another activity we did was climb up to Diamond Head Peak, which is a HUGE hill/mountain.  The hike up wasn’t always fun but the view from the top was incredible. These are the types of things that make me love Lewis volleyball. Lewis has showed me how running miles through sand dunes and up mountains can not only be rewarding but also give you a great workout.

Although I’ve only been a Flyer for a few weeks, I already have made so many great friends and memories. We aren’t just friends. We are a family. One of my favorite memories besides Hawaii is our yearly dunes trip. This year during preseason we did a scavenger hunt in the Michigan dunes. The five coaches spread them selves out literally across the dunes. Everyone was broken into teams and given a clue. With the clue, we had to run miles over, around, and through the sand and water to find them. And for anyone who hasn’t run in sand, let me tell you, its not easy.  Once found, we had to do a crazy physical activity to receive next clue. In the end my team won the scavenger hunt portion of the dunes! It was a lot of work but still lots of fun.

I am so glad I decided to come to Lewis. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that this is where I belong.  It’s my home away from home. I can’t wait to spend my next four years here! GO FLYERS!

-Danica Schreck

Hello Flyer Fans!!

My name is Alexis Davito and I am a redshirt sophomore rightside!

We are currently in Hawaii and it is GORGEOUS and WONDERFUL! I could not pick a more amazing group of people to be here with.

This week was the first week of regular play and it feels great to have the team back on the court again! My favorite movement of the season so far was our nice family dinner at Gerard and Lindsey’s house! We had a great time bonding as a team and also got to watch Cassidy struggle her way through a dog door.  We sure know how to have fun! :)

My least favorite moment was our first team loss but that loss showed us how much potential we have and that as long as we keep working we will be unstoppable.  This has been a great season so far and it has only just begun.  I can not wait to see what the next couple of months have in store for us!

Love always your Lewis Flyer,

Alexis Davito
