ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team won the series finale against Truman State 6-0 on Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo., and took three of the four games in the series to clinch a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament (May 12-15) at Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.
The Flyers (18-21-1, 13-11 GLVC) jumped on top with a run in the first inning on
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) solo home run with two out in the inning. Lewis added to its lead with another run in the third as Barry drove in
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) with a single up the middle.
The Flyers extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off the inning with a single to left and scored on Barry's one out double to left center. Lewis added three more runs in the ninth. Fox drove in
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) with a single to right to make it 4-0 and
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) drove in the final two runs with a single to center.
The Flyers outhit the Bulldogs (17-29, 7-13 GLVC) 13-6 in the contest and were led by Barry with three hits and three RBI while Fox, Preusser and
Gavin Kriegel (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) had two hits each.
Jake Karaba (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and
Ben Davis (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) combined for the shutout. Karaba struck out a season-high 10 batters in his six innings of work to improve to 1-4. Davis pitched the final three innings allowing just a hit with two strikeouts and walk to knotch his first save of the season.
Lewis wraps up the regular season next weekend as it hosts Wayne State (Mich.) in a non-conference three-game series. The Flyers and Warriors will play a doubleheader next Saturday (May 7) starting at 12 p.m.
