Lewis Baseball Drops Pair to Quincy

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Quincy Saturday (April 9) at Brennan Field. The Flyers fall to 10-15-1 overall, 6-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks improve to 16-13 overall, 7-4 in the GLVC.

Game 1 - Quincy 13, Lewis 0

The Hawks struck right away with a leadoff home run by Lance Logsdon and two batters later Dayson Croes hit a two-run homer and it was a 3-0 game three batters in. Quincy scored on a walk to make it 4-0 and then Logsdon singled home two more runs for a 6-0 advantage after one.

Quincy added four more runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as it mustered 15 hits in the seven-inning game. Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) had two hits to lead the Flyers.

Jay Hammel (4-2) earned the win for the Hawks, allowed two hits in five innings, striking out eight. Jake Karaba (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) (0-3) suffered the loss for the Flyers. Jackson Brown (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits and one unearned run, striking out two.

Game 2 - Quincy 4, Lewis 2

The Hawks scored twice in the first as a walk scored the first run and a hit batter scored the second run. A ground out in the top of the sixth made it a 3-0 lead.

The Flyers were held hitless through five innings, but Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) broke the no hitter in the bottom of the sixth with a home run to center field. That would start a rally as Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) followed with an infield single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) then doubled down the left field line to score Alt, making it a 3-2 game. A ground out ended the inning.

Quincy opened the seventh inning with a single and a sacrifice advanced the runner to second. An intentional walk, a fielder's choice and a pair of walks led to another run before a strike out ended the inning with Quincy ahead 4-2.

Gavin Kriegel (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) opened the bottom of the seventh reaching by getting hit by a pitch. Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. A single by Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) put runners on the corners with one out. A pop up and another hit batter loaded the bases with two outs, but a strike out ended the game.

Griffin Kirn (3-1) picked up the win for Quincy, going 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, striking out six, while Cruz Meier earned the save, his second. Anthony Sorrentino (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. Ben Davis (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) pitched 2.1 shutout innings in relief. The Flyers allowed just five hits in the game, but walked 10 and hit three batters.

The Flyers will look to earn a series split Sunday when they host Quincy at noon.
