No. 18 Flyers Grounded By Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Lewis University's 18th ranked men's lacrosse team fell to Lake Erie 13-9 on Saturday afternoon in Painesville, Ohio. The Flyers drop to 3-2 while the Storm improve to 2-2.

Lewis got off to a good start scoring the first two goals of the contest as Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn./Totino Grace) and Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) both scored in the first seven minutes of the contest. Lake Erie scored the final three goals of the frame to take a 3-2 lead into the second stanza.

Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) scored 2:08 into the second quarter to tie the contest but the Storm got back-to-back goals from Blain Wallace and Nick Askin to retake the lead at 5-3. Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) scored the final two goals of the half for the Flyers to send the teams into the locker room tied at 5-5 at the half.

Lewis broke the tie early in the third quarter as Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored on a man up situation but Lake Erie scored the next three goals to regain its two-goal advantage. Dalep added his second of the frame with exactly six minutes to draw the Flyers within one.

The Storm scored twice in the span of 1:08 late in the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead into the final quarter.

Lake Erie extended its lead scoring three goals in the first 6:11 of the final session. Lewis scored twice in the span of 0:23 late in the contest to pull within four but it wouldn't be enough.

Stone led the Flyers with three goals in the contest while Dalep added two and Schroeder and Kask finished with a goal apiece.

The Flyers outshot the Storm 47-33 but were outshot in shots on goal 21-20. Lewis won 10-of-27 faceoffs in the contest and scooped up 35 ground balls. The Flyers caused eight turnovers in the contest led by Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen), Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and Tyler Shively-Ablang (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical School) with two each. Domenic Tarello (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) scooped up five ground balls. Rathe made seven saves in goal.

Lewis is back at home on Wednesday (March 9) as it takes on Davenport at 2 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
