ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's and women's swimming teams opened its 2021-22 season on Saturday with a dual meet against Olivet Nazarene at the Lewis Pool. The Flyer men won 196-65 while the women fell to the Tigers 183-76.
On the men's side, Lewis won 13 of the 14 events in the dual and were led by
Jackson Mugg (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne East),
Rhys Taylor (Nottingham, England/National C of E Academy),
Miguel Turcios (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Canterbury School),
Ari Kissel (Berlin, Germany/) and
Ruben van Leeuwen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/CIU/Christelyk Lyceum Veenendaal) who each won two events in the dual.
Mugg won both the 500 and 1,000 yard freestyles with times of 4:57.48 and 10:12.13 respectively. He, Taylor and
Isaac Rolfsen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Homeschool) went 1-2-3 in the 1000 free.
Kissel picked up his first event win in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.40 and added his second event win in the 200 individual medley finishing in a time of 1:56.92. The Flyers took the top five spots in the 200 IM with Turcios coming in second while
Mariano Sosa (Olavarria, Argentina/),
Matthew Senese (Joliet, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and
Alec Danko (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Turcios, making his Flyer debut, won the 50 backstroke with a time of 25.18 seconds and the 100 backstroke in a time of 53.07 seconds.
Taylor won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.83 seconds and the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.13 seconds.
van Leeuwen was the winner in the 50 butterfly with a time of 22.80 seconds and the 100 free in a time of 47.29 seconds.
Carter Thoss (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was third in the 50 fly with a time of 24.95 seconds and
Russell Smith (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was fourth in the 100 free in a time of 51.06 seconds.
Also picking up a win for Lewis was
Jabari Ramsey (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Land O' Lakes) in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 23.16 and he was second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.64.
Lewis won both the 400 medley relay and 400 free relay. The Flyer quartet of Sosa, Ramsey, van Leeuwen and Kissel were the winners in the 400 medley with a time of 3:29.44 while the squad of
Adrian Wlodarz (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove),
Ethan Fox (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central), van Leeuwen and Kissel were the winners in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:12.08.
On the women's side,
Larissa Alves (Panama/) won two events while
Kiara Barnes (Cape Town, South Africa/) and
Erin Bachmeier (/) won an event each.
Alves took the top spots in the 50 back and 100 backstrokes with times of 29.12 and 1:01.41 respectively. She also posted a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley.
Barnes was the winner in the 1000 free with a time of 11:15.17 and finished third in both the 500 free and 100 back with times of 5:35.06 and 1:04.85 respectively.
Bachmeier was the winner in the 50 free finishing in a time of 25.27 seconds and she was third in the 100 free at 56.15 seconds.
Daniela Navarrete (Panama City, Panama/) posted a second place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.69 and was third in the 50 fly with a time of 28.69 seconds.
The Flyers return to action next Saturday as they travel to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI in a dual beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT) at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
