Flyers fall to Truman State in GLVC Quarterfinals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's basketball season came to end on Friday as it fell to Truman State 103-56 in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers were held to a season low 56 points and allowed a season-high 103 points.
 
It was the first time Lewis has allowed a 100 a points in a game since Feb. 21, 2008 when it lost to Indianapolis 113-109 in triple overtime.
 
The Flyers scored the first six points of the contest but Truman (19-9) used a 26-4 over an eight-minute stretch to build a 26-10 lead after a jumper from Broderic Thomas. Marco Pettinato (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) scored six straight points for Lewis to cut the lead to 28-16 but the Bulldogs responded by scoring 10 of the next 16 points to build their largest lead of the half at 38-22 on a three from Jake Velky with 3:05 left in the half.
 
The Flyers got the lead down to 11 after a three from Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) with 2:13 to go in the frame but Truman scored the final four points of the half to head into the locker room with a 42-27 lead.
 
Lewis shot 46 percent (12-for-26) from the floor in the first 20 minutes but was 1-of-10 from three and went 2-of-3 at the foul line. Pettinato led the Flyers with eight points while Wilson added five.
 
The Bulldogs shot 56 percent (15-for-27) from the field, was 5-of-13 from three and shot 88 percent at the foul line. Velky led all scorers with 12 points while Thomas added seven.
 
Truman state opened the second half on a 16-4 run to extend its lead to 27 points. Lewis struggled to shoot the ball in the second half making only 9-of-33 shots and was 2-for-12 from the three-point line.
 
Wilson led Lewis with 13 points and 12 rebounds to finish with his ninth double-double of the season while Pettinato and Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) added 10 points each. Bell and Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) had two assists each.
 
The Flyers finished the game shooting 36 percent (21-for-59) from the floor, made only 3 of 22 attempts from three and shot 85 percent at the foul line.
 
Velky and Thomas led the Bulldogs with 23 points apiece while Zach Fischer chipped in with 13. Turner Scott and Jacob Socha finished with 10 points each. Thomas had seven rebounds and Velky dished out six assists.
 
Truman State shot over 70 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game making 37-of-57 shots (64.9 percent) from the floor.
 
The Flyers finish the season with a record of 15-14 and advanced the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament for the 12th straight year.
