Romeoville, Ill. - The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced on Tuesday (March 21) that Lewis University redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was selected as the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending March 19th.

Coenen averaged 1.5 blocks and 1.13 digs-per-set last week, as the Flyers swept McKendree (March 16) and dropped a narrow five-set match to No. 2 Ohio State (March 18).

His most impressive performance came against the Buckeyes, as he notched a team-best eight blocks (1 solo) and five digs. He was the linchpin for the Flyer defense against Ohio State, as the Buckeyes hit below .300 for the first time this season.

Coenen was also impressive offensively against Ohio State, as he recorded a match-high 22 kills while hitting .500 (22 kills, 3 errors, 38 attacks) with four service aces.

"Coenen was a force at the net for us (over the weekend)," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "He grinded on both sides of the net to help us compete."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (March 24), as the Flyers welcome Penn State to Neil Carey Arena for a 7 PM first serve.
