Plainfield, Ill. - With a berth in the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship on the line, Lewis University looked to senior
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) to deliver, and boy, did she.
Wetmore earned the 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Rockhurst's Emma Persson to clinch the 5-4 win over the Hawks and push the Flyers into their fifth GLVC Championship match in the past six years at the 5 Star Tennis Center on Saturday (April 30) evening.
"It's not the way we planned it to go" Lewis head coach
Brett Bridel said. "If you want someone out there (with the match on the line), you'd want a four-year senior who's been through the grind like
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa).
"She showed that she could fight and figured out a way to get it done (today)."
With the victory, the Flyers extend their win-streak to 11 and improve to 17-4 on the season while advancing to the GLVC Championship to face Drury at approximately 12:30 PM on Sunday (May 1) at the 5 Star Tennis Center. Rockhurst falls to 13-6 on the campaign.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis sophomores
Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) earned an 8-4 victory over Rockhurst's Emma Schelble and Tamara Santos. Andrejszki added a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-0 win over Schelble at No. 1 singles, while Mindiyarova beat Rockhurst's Janine Koleta 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Lewis senior
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) picked up the 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Rockhurst's Kim Vrugteveen at No. 3 singles.
