Romeoville, Ill. – The top of lineup shined for the Lewis University women's tennis team as they earned the 5-3 victory over Maryville in the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Quarterfinals at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex on Friday (April 29).
With the victory, the Flyers (16-4) extend their winning streak to 10 matches and take on Rockhurst on Saturday (April 30) in a GLVC semifinal showdown. Maryville ends its season with a record of 7-10.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis' sophomore tandem of
Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) earned the 8-4 victory over Maryville's Puck Vlaskamp and Rebekah Anderson. Andrejszki added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Maryville's Sarah Etter at No. 1 singles, while Mindiyarova blanked Andrea Fandino, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' senior duo of
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) whitewashed Fandino and Lucy Horbatowski, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles. Nguyen put the match away for the Flyers with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Vlaskamp at No. 3 singles.
"I am proud of the way the ladies played today," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "(Megan and Jill) set the tone with their 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles and (Dora and Nora) fought through some early nerves to get the job done at No. 1 doubles.
"In singles play, the ladies looked like they had control of their games and executed very well," Bridel continued. "It was a great win."
