QUINCY, Ill. – Lewis and Quincy played a pair of similar games with different outcomes on Wednesday (April 20) afternoon. The two Great Lakes Valley Conference teams split the non-conference doubleheader. Quincy won game one 14-1 while Lewis won game two 16-5. Being non-conference, both games were seven-inning contests.
Game One – Quincy 14, Lewis 1 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
The Hawks went ahead in the second with a three-run spot. They put it away the next half inning thanks to a seven-run third inning. The Flyers were out-hit 15-3 in the game.
Lewis' lone run came in the seventh inning on a solo home run by freshman
Zach Parker (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South). Now 12 different Flyers have a home run on the season.
Freshman
Robert Talarico (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) took the loss for Lewis. He is now 0-3. Braden Shull went six innings for the Hawks for the win. He improves his record to 5-1.
Game Two – Lewis 16, Quincy 5 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
The Flyers pushed a run across every inning but the second. A three-run first inning got the Flyers offense going. Junior
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) led the game off with a double. It was one of his three hits in the game. Senior
Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) also had three hits and knocked in three runs.
Each Lewis starter had a hit and a run scored. Sophomore
Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates), senior
Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and freshman
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) each had a home run.
It was 16-0 entering the seventh inning when the Hawks scored five runs to make the final an 11-run difference.
The visitors out-hit Quincy 19-5.
Junior
Jake Herron (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) started for Lewis. He went three innings, allowing no runs and one hit to get the win (4-3). Cole Crawford took the loss for Quincy (1-2).
The Hawks are now 27-9. Lewis is 20-15. The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (April 23) in a GLVC doubleheader at Southern Indiana. Note the first pitch of 2 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to start at noon.
