Lewis Women's Tennis Claims Third Place In GLVC With 5-3 Win Over UMSL

Flyers dominate at the top of their line-up.

The Lewis University women's tennis team used the strength of the top of its line-up to earn the 5-3 victory over Missouri-St. Louis to claim third-place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, hosted by Rockhurst, at the Plaza Tennis Center on Sunday (April 19) morning.

"I'm so proud of the ladies today and this whole season," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "This group has really overachieved and outperformed my expectations this year."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 13-7 overall, while the Tritons drop to 10-9. The Flyers now await word to see if they qualified for the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament, as bids will be announced at 7 PM on April 28th on www.ncaa.com.

At No. 1 doubles, Lewis freshman Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) and junior Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) earned the 8-2 win over UMSL's Lina Parra and Chandler Duchaine. Mindiyarova also dropped Parra, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while Nguyen beat Renee Verboven, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

Lewis' No. 2 doubles tandem of sophomore Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) and junior Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) teamed up for the 9-8 (7-2) win over Natalia Carvalhais and Leanne Cantalupo. Banic clinched the win for the Flyers with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Carvalhais at No. 3 singles.
