St. Louis, Mo. - The No. 47 Lewis University women's tennis team won its 10th straight match and advanced to the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament finals for the fourth-straight year with the 5-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in the GLVC semifinals at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center on Saturday (Apr. 19) afternoon.
The Flyers, who are seeking their first title since 2012, will meet No. 21 Drury for the fourth-straight season for the championship on Sunday (Apr. 20) at noon.
"We didn't play doubles well at the start, but we just kept fighting and found a way to get all three wins," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "That was a huge momentum swing for us heading into singles play."
With the win, Lewis improves to 14-3 overall, while the Tritons are 16-6.
Lewis' No. 1 doubles tandem of senior
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and sophomore
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) paired up for the 8-6 victory over UMSL's Louisa Werner and Nina Bellanger. Kranczicki blanked Lina Parra, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, the Flyer duo of senior
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and freshman
Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) notched the 8-5 win over Natalia Carvalhais and Parra. Lanstiak bested Werner, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
The Flyers completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, as senior
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and sophomore
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) beat UMSL's Renee Verboven and Danielle Henkel, 8-3.
