St. Louis, Mo. – Despite solid outings from their starters, the Lewis University baseball team struggled to pick up runs on Saturday (March 22) as the Flyers dropped both games in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Maryville, 4-3 and 6-1, at Weber Field.

The Flyers fall to 8-9 on the year and 2-3 in GLVC play while the Saints improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-2 in league action.

"Today was a case of missed opportunities," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "We had chances to win in both games but we just didn't get it done.

"We have to regroup and come out with more energy on Sunday to salvage the series."

In the first game, Maryville scored single runs in the third and fourth on three hits to take a 2-0 lead before the Flyers jumped on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

With one out in the sixth, senior
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) and junior
Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) hit back-to-back singles before senior
Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) doubled in Buddle to cut the Saints lead in half. With a single, sophomore
Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) collected two RBI to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.

The Saints answered with a run in the top of the seventh on two hits and a Flyer error then added an insurance run in the ninth for the 4-3 victory.

Lewis starter
Eann Cox (Erie, Ill./Erie) threw 8.1 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits. Cox (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season as he struck out nine and walked five.

Maryville's starter, Tyler Omlid, improved to 2-1 on the season after tossing a complete game as he gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out 10.

In the second game, the Maryville broke open the game in the seventh inning, posting six runs on the board. The Saints tallied four hits, two for extra bases, while drawing four walks in the inning.

Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) hit a double before crossing the plate on a ground out by senior
Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West).

Flyer starter
Kendall Paluch (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), 0-4 on the year, tossed 6.2 innings in the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits and walked two.

The Flyers return to action on Sunday (March 23) when they take on Maryville for a GLVC doubleheader starting at 12 PM at Weber Field.
