East Peoria, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team went 2-1 in the opening day of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament beating both Bellarmine (5-4) and Quincy (11-4), including an 8-2 loss to No. 1 Indianapolis at the EastSide Centre. The Flyers (28-15) will take on William Jewell at 11 AM on Sunday (May 5).
In the opener, Flyer senior shortstop
Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) connected for a walk-off single to propel Lewis to the 5-4 victory over No. 5 Bellarmine. Vucsko went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while Flyer designated player
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) added two hits for Lewis. Junior third baseman
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) roped a three-run homer in the second inning.
With the score tied at four, Lewis senior center fielder
Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) reached base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a fielders choice. Hefler moved over to second on an infield single by Brems and scored on Vucsko's walk-off base hit.
Lewis sophomore pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) earned the victory for the Flyers despite surrendering three home runs on the afternoon. Bowler allowed four runs and nine hits, while walking five batters and striking out two Knights. Her counterpart Ally Foster (8-4) took the loss for the Knights, as she gave up two runs and five hits in five innings of work.
Foster (2-for-3, RBI, run) accounted for one of the three home runs for the Knights, as she connected for a solo blast in the fourth inning. Bellarmine third baseman Madi Ratliff went 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Knights offensively.
In game two, Indianapolis scored seven unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings on their way to the 8-2 victory.
Indianapolis freshman pitcher Morgan Foley (26-3) held Lewis to two runs and three hits in seven innings of work. All three of the Flyer hits came in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by sophomore designated player
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North).
Brems surrendered eight runs - five earned - and seven hits in six innings to fall to 12-8 on the campaign.
In the Flyers' third game of the day against Quincy, Lewis scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run Ullrich homer, and never looked back. Lewis tacked on to that lead in the fourth-inning with a two-run shot by Brems to extend the Flyers' lead to 6-0.

Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) collected three hits, scored and drove in a run for Lewis against the Hawks.
Bowler (16-7) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, while fanning four Hawks. Quincy's Lauren Francis (10-12) took the loss for the Hawks, surrendering four runs and seven hits in three innings.
