Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University baseball team snapped their six-game losing streak on Saturday (May 4) when the Flyers picked up 3-1 and 12-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victories over against University of Indianapolis on Saturday (May 4) at Brennan Field.

The GLVC East Division-leading Flyers improve to 28-13 on the season and 22-9 in the conference while the Greyhounds go to 26-19 on the year and 18-16 against GLVC teams.

“We put together 16 innings of good baseball today,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “To give up only one run all day against a team like Indianapolis is outstanding.”

In the first game, junior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit a single to center field to score junior Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West), putting the Flyers up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Flyers held the lead until the top of the eighth, when the Greyhounds scored their only run of the day on a single to center field.

Lewis answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, getting hits by senior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) and junior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect).

The Flyers starting pitcher junior Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) threw eight innings to get the win. Helwich (9-2) gave up one run on five hits, struck out five and walked two. Sophomore Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) came out of the bullpen to get the save in the ninth. Warner (4) gave up two hits, walked and struck out one.

Indianapolis' Evan Eyer (1-2) took the loss, throwing two innings in relief. He gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits, walked and struck out one.

In the second game the Flyers jumped on the Greyhounds pitchers early, scoring four runs in the first, third and the fourth innings.

The Flyers plated four runs in the first inning on hits by Slaby, Kapka and redshirt senior Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) while junior Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Schroeder drew walks. Albano scored Slaby on a ground out while Kapka's single through the right side of the field scored Murray and Schroeder. Thomas' hit scored Kapka from second for the fourth run of the inning.

Murray led off the third inning with a solo home run to right field. Albano doubled in Schroeder after he got on base with a single up the middle of the field. Thomas then singled to center field to score Albano before freshman Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence) picked up Kapka from third to push the Flyers lead to 8-0.

Slaby scored on a double to left field by Schroeder in the bottom of the fourth inning. Murray and Schroeder crossed the plate on a single by Albano and an error by the Greyhounds' left fielder. Kapka legged out a double to score Albano for his third hit of the game.

Lewis starting pitcher senior Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) threw seven innings to pick up the win. Frahm (7-1) scattered three hits, struck out eight and walked three in the shutout.

Indianapolis' Clint Seefeldt (2-3) faced three batters in the first inning to take the loss. He gave up three runs on one hit and two base-on-balls.

The Flyers and the Greyhounds close out the regular season on Sunday (May 5) with another GLVC doubleheader at Brennan Field. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
