Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University baseball team dropped two in-region games to Quincy University, 5-2, 10-9 on Tuesday (April 30) at Brennan Field.
The Flyers fall to 26-13 on the season while the Hawks improve to 27-15.
“It was two tough games today,” Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. “We had a chance there in game two to win. Quincy was able to get one more big hit than us and that was the difference.”
In the first game the Hawks picked up a run in the top of the first. The Flyers answered in the bottom of the inning, when junior
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) singled in junior
Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) from third.
Quincy broke the tie in the third, as the Hawks' Peter Cunningham got a base hit to score two teammates before getting tagged out at second trying to advance on the play.
The Flyers got within one in the bottom of the fourth, when junior
Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) scored on a wild pitch.
The Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, after Cunningham doubled, then stole third before scoring on a ground out by Adam Hightower.
Lewis starter sophomore
Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched 5.1 innings in the loss. Warner (2-1) gave up four runs on 11 hits, striking out five and walking three.
Quincy's Matt Fishman (3-1) earned the win with four innings pitched in relief. He gave up one hit while striking out four.
In game two, Quincy posted three runs in the top of the first inning on four hits and an error.
Albano legged out a double to trade places with senior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) at second base for the Flyers first run of the game in the first inning. Lewis evened the score at 3-all in the second inning when sophomore
Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) hit a home run to left field.
The Hawks added three runs in the third inning on three extra-base hits including a solo home run.
In the bottom of the third, the Flyers' bats woke up to score four runs on six hits. Murray hit a leadoff home run, which was followed by three consecutive singles by Schroeder, Albano and redshirt junior
Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic). Schroeder scored on Thomas' single, and redshirt senior
Zach Stetson (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) singled through the middle to score Albano and Thomas to even up the score at 6-all.
Quincy briefly took the lead when they scored a single run in the fourth, but the Flyers added two in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double by Baldassano to regain an 8-7 lead.
In the fifth inning, Quincy's Cunningham homered to left center to even the score at 8-all. The Flyers answered in the bottom of the sixth inning as Thomas doubled home Schroeder from first base.
Quincy scratched two runs across on three hits in the top of the seventh to take the game, as the Flyers left a runner stranded and were unable to come back in the bottom of the frame.
The Flyers' freshman pitcher
Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence) took the loss, throwing two innings in relief. Rotkvich (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three.
Quincy's Tim Haley (1-0) earned the win with two innings of work out of the bullpen. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out one.
