Springfield, Mo. - The No. 41 Lewis University women's tennis team will have a chance to avenge their loss in the Great Lakes Valley Conference finals, as the Flyers earned the 5-2 win over Wayne State in a NCAA Midwest Regional Opening Round match-up at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Sunday (Apr. 28) afternoon.
Lewis will take on top-seeded Drury at 10 AM on Monday (Apr. 29). The Panthers defeated Lewis, 5-3, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on April 20th.
"I don't think it was our best tennis today, but we played determined enough to get it done as a team," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said.
With the win, Lewis improves to 15-4, while Wayne State ends the season with a record of 19-7.
Lewis jumped out to an early 2-1 lead following doubles play, as the Flyers received victories from both their No. 1 and No. 2 tandems.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis'
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) dropped Yahsha Moore and Anne Li Briand, 8-4. Lanstiak also defeated Moore, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Kranczicki bested Julia Kamenko, 6-4, 6-2.
Lewis' No. 2 doubles team of
Brianna Markgraf (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) upended Alex Poissant and Kamenko, 8-3.
The Flyers received their final victory at No. 6 singles, as junior
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) earned the 6-2, 6-3 win over Jessica Kruczek to clinch the match.
