No. 21 Lewis Women’s Basketball Advances Past Missouri S&T, 50-42

Evansville, Ind. – The No. 21 Lewis University women's basketball team knocked out Missouri S&T for the fourth-straight postseason with a 50-42 quarterfinal victory at the 2013 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Friday (March 8) at the Ford Center.
 
The Flyers improve to 22-5 on the year while the Miners wrap-up the season 16-12.
 
“It was what you expect when two tough defensive teams go at it,” Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. “I think our team played good defense and, ultimately, that is what won us the game.”
 
Freshman forward Mariyah Henley led the Flyers with 11 points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior guard Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) blocked four Miner shots to move into fifth all-time in Lewis program history with 97 career blocked shots.
 
The squads battled for the upper hand in the first half, exchanging the lead six times. The Flyers put together a 6-2 run in the last four minutes of half to take a 23-19 into the locker room.
 
In the second half, the Flyers picked up the tempo of the game. Missouri S&T took a brief lead at 26-25 but Lewis went on a 20-7 run to expand their lead to a game-high 12 points with four minutes left in the game. Reinhart led the Flyers with six points during the run, while senior Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) chipped in five points.

The Miners made a late push to get within three points with 41 seconds left in the game but were forced to foul to stop the clock. Murdock made three free throws while sophomore guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) hit two of her own to seal the victory.
 
Missouri S&T's Hailee Parks led all scorers with 12 points and 10 rebounds, as the Miners out-rebounded the Flyers 48-39. The Flyers made a season-low nine turnovers while forcing the Miners to commit 13. 
 
Top-seeded Lewis advances to meet fifth-seeded UW-Parkside on Saturday (March 9) in a semifinal game at 8:30 PM at the Ford Center.
