Canton, Ohio – Lewis University freshman Bryan Wiener (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) (Mundelein, Ill.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Men's Swimming Freshman of the Year to cap off the final day of the GLIAC Swimming Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium. He becomes the first Flyer since 2007-08 when Kevin Coates earned the honor.
 
Wiener took second in the 200-yard backstroke with the time of 1:47.84, which earned him a NCAA B cut and broke the Lewis program record of 1:49.62 set by Michael Lapustin on Feb. 23, 2007.  He also broke the program record in the 100-yard freestyle of 45.72 set by Josh Rogers on Feb. 15, 2003 as the lead leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 45.66. The relay team of Wiener, senior Brandon Drogemuller (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) (Hollister, Calif./San Benito), junior Derick Carlson (Norridge, Ill./St. Patrick) (Norridge, Ill./St. Patrick) and sophomore Brett Busch (East Moline, Ill./United Township) (East Moline, Ill./United Township) earned a NCAA B cut with a fifth-place time of 3:07.94.
 
“Bryan had a very strong performance at this meet,” Lewis head men's swimming coach Roger Karns said. “It was, by far, the best performance by a freshman this year.”
 
Drogemuller took first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:55.69 and earned a NCAA B cut time.
 
Sophomore Tyson Polack (Canby, Ore./Canby) (Canby, Ore./Canby) earned a NCAA B cut in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.81.
 
Lewis finished in fifth out of eight schools with 386.5 points.
 
The Flyers will next prepare for the 2012-13 NCAA Swimming Championships on March 6-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
