Lewis Women’s Volleyball Advances Past Missouri-St. Louis, 3-0

Kim Vertin and Alexis Davito both posted 11 kills in the win

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) and redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) both tallied 11 kills in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament quarterfinal 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday (Nov. 22) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
Lewis will take on Truman State in the GLVC Championship Tournament semi-finals on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Neil Carey Arena with first serve at 7:30 PM.
 
The Flyers improve to 24-8 on the year while the Tritons complete the season with a 17-15 record.
 
"The team worked really hard tonight," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "UMSL constantly made defensive changes throughout the match.
 
"The team kept working and moving the ball around until it landed."
 
Vertin also collected nine digs and one block assist while Davito collected three service aces and six digs for the Flyers. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had a stellar night with 31 assists, nine digs, six kills and two block assists. 
 
In the first set, the Flyers hit .250, tallying 16 kills with seven errors on 36 attempts while holding UMSL to a .129 hitting percentage (9 K, 5 E, 31 TA). Lewis sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) and Vertin both collected four kills in the set while Cebula picked up two total blocks.
 
The Flyers carried the momentum into the second set to roll past the Tritons. Davito picked up five kills and two aces in the set while five different Flyers all tallied at least one block assist.
 
The Tritons pushed back at the Flyers in the third set as the squads were knotted up six times. Lewis sophomore outside hitter Lauren O'Brien (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) came off the bench to spark an 11-7 run with three kills and one block assist to close out the set.
 
The Tritons were led by Allie Ewing's 10 kills while Lindsay Meyer collected 16 assists. UMSL libero Emily Bragaw had a floor-high 13 digs and five assists.
