SOMERS, Wis. – Lewis baseball won their 10th Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season on Tuesday (April 3) afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Parkside. Lewis won game one 7-6 and then took game two 6-3.

Game one had four lead changes and two ties in the final three and half innings.

Sophomore Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Flyers a quick 2-0 lead. A two-out RBI double by sophomore Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) in the second made it a 3-0 game. The Flyers held the 3-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Rangers scored four runs. All four runs came off starter senior Jim Glasgow (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South/Joliet Junior College), who was cruising until the sixth. However two of the runs were unearned in the inning.

“Jim was great through five innings and even in the sixth it wasn't all him.” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “We had a couple plays we didn't make (in the sixth).”

It was a 7-7 game entering the ninth when Lewis put one on the board in their half. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) led the inning off with a single and advanced all the way to third when UW-Parkside's pickoff attempt went down the line. Bolling then scored on a single by senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/DuPage).

Senior Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) halted the Rangers' streak of scoring in three consecutive innings by recording a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth for his third save of the season. Sophomore Tom Durkin (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) picked up the win for the Flyers after pitching the eighth. His record is now 3-1.

Lewis' 1-4 hitters were a combined 9-18 in game one. Buddle, Brauer and Albano all knocked in two runs. Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) added three hits and scored a run in the contest.

“We gave the lead up but we did a good job fighting back,” McDonough said. “We got some big hits and ran the bases really well all day.”

The Flyers never trailed in game two after junior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) hit a three-run home run in the first inning. Lewis added a pair of runs in the fifth. Albano had an RBI single and a run scored in the frame. Norwood earned his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Buddle.

Junior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) threw a 7.0 inning complete game to pick up the win and move his record to 3-1. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

“Michael settled in as the game went on,” McDonough said. “He had some trouble with his offspeed stuff but he had more command as the game went on.”

Brauer and Albano each had two hits in game two.

UW-Parkside drops to 11-15 (5-9 GLVC). Lewis improves to 19-7 (10-4 GLVC). The Flyers have won eight of their last nine games. Lewis will try to stay hot this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis for a GLVC series against the Greyhounds. Both doubleheaders are set for noon (ET) starts.
