ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis baseball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Bellarmine on Sunday (April 29) at Brennan Field on Senior Day. The Flyers won game one 4-2 before losing in game two 12-0.

Senior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) had a Senior Day to remember in game one. He earned a complete game 7.0 inning victory to move his record to 5-3. Lahey allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. He stuck out one batter. Lahey also issued a walk, just the third walk he has allowed this season. Lahey leads the nation in fewest walks issued per nine innings.

Lahey benefited from some small ball as the Flyers had three sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly in the contest.

The Flyers tied the game up in the bottom of the first after the Knights scored in the first inning for a third consecutive game. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) walked to start the first. He moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice and then scored on an RBI ground out by senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage).

Lewis added three runs in the second thanks to two hits and two Bellarmine errors. Senior Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and freshman Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) each had an RBI in the frame.

Bellarmine scored one in the fifth to make it 4-2. In the sixth, a two-out walk and a double put runners at second and third. Lahey got out of the two-out jam by inducing a fly out.

“In game one we came out with some energy,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “Pat put together another solid effort and it was a good team win.”

Benjamin Fuchs (3-5) took the loss for the Knights.

Game two was only a 2-0 score after four innings but the Knights opened it up with six runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Junior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) started and took the loss. He is now 5-2. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Jason Sterrett earned the win for Bellarmine (4-3). Lewis was out-hit 19-5 in the game.

“They jumped out on us early and we couldn't minimize the damage in the middle innings,” McDonough said.

Bellarmine is now 24-22 (16-14 GLVC). Lewis is 30-16 (19-13 GLVC). The game one win puts Lewis at the 30-win mark for the first time since 2000.
