Springfield, Mo. - Lewis University sophomore Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) broke a 4-all tie with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Drury's Alana Bellinger at No. 6 singles to help the No. 47 Flyers clinch the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship with the 5-4 victory over the No. 22 Panthers at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Saturday (Apr. 21) afternoon.
"I am so proud of the ladies," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "It was a total team effort this whole weekend."
The win is Lewis' 12th straight and they improve to 23-2 on the campaign, while Drury falls to 18-4 overall. Lewis will now await their NCAA Regional opponent, to be announced on the NCAA Division II Selection Show at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday (Apr.24) night on www.ncaa.com.
Aside from her big win at No. 6 singles, Mills teamed up with senior Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) at No. 3 doubles for the 8-2 triumph over Abbey Sharpe and Bellinger.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis senior Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) and GLVC Player of the Year, sophomore Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) dropped Drury's Jelena Schaeftimeier and Pelagie Gamo, 8-5. Lanstiak added a 6-1, 6-2 defeat over No. 50 Beatriz Juan at No. 1 singles.
The Flyers' final win came at No. 2 singles, as sophomore Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) beat Gamo, 6-2, 7-5.
