Springfield, Mo. - The No. 47 Lewis University women's tennis team will compete for the Great Lakes Valley Conference title for the second-straight season, as the Flyers extended their winning streak to 11 matches with victories over both Quincy (5-0) and Rockhurst (5-3) at the 2012 GLVC Women's Tennis Tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Friday (Apr. 20) afternoon.
Lewis advances to the finals where they will take on five-time defending champion Drury on Saturday (Apr. 21). First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Cooper Tennis Complex. In last season's finals, Drury defeated Lewis, 5-1.
With the wins, Lewis improves to 22-2 on the campaign, while Rockhurst is now 11-3 and Quincy ends their season with a record of 7-9.
Lewis was motivated in its showdown against Rockhurst, as the Hawks were the last team - and the only Division II team - to defeat the Flyers this season.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis sophomore
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes) and senior
Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) handed Karsyn Betts and Alex Scheible an 8-4 defeat. Lanstiak extended her singles winning streak to 28 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 come-from-behind win over Maureen Rielley at No. 1 singles.
The Flyers won their second doubles match of the afternoon at No. 3, as senior
Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) and sophomore
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dropped Rachel and Mary Lanaghen, 9-7. Hargrove added a 6-4, 6-1 win over Erin Bales at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 singles, Lewis sophomore
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) beat Betts, 6-2, 6-0 for the Flyers' fifth and deciding victory of the match.
Against Quincy, Lewis freshman
Brianna Markgraf (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and Kranczicki paired up for the 8-1 win over Pam Ganer and Samantha Halfpap at No. 1 doubles. Kranczicki also dropped Ganer's sister Leslie, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
Lanstiak and Brown defeated Leslie Ganer and Allison Callahan, 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Lanstiak added a 6-1, 6-0 win over Pam Ganer at No. 1 singles.
Lewis completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, as Hargrove and Mills cruised past Ashley Longshore and Michelle Gass for the 8-2 win.
