Romeoville, Ill. -
It would have been easy for the Lewis University softball team to hang their heads after Indianapolis pitcher Jennifer DeMotte tossed her second perfect game against the Flyers this season, following the No. 2 Greyhounds' 9-0 (5 inn.) in game one of their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 15) afternoon.

The Flyers, however, would do no such thing, as they handed the No. 2 Greyhounds the 4-3 defeat in the nightcap to salvage the doubleheader split at the Lewis Softball Field.

With the split, Lewis is now 23-22 on the campaign and 15-15 in GLVC action, while the No. 2 Greyhounds are now 42-3 overall and 26-2 in conference play.

DeMotte (28-3)  was flawless for the second time against the Flyers this season in the opener, as she did not allow a single runner and struck out two batters in five innings of work.

UIndy left fielder Samanth Krcelich led the Greyhounds offensively, as she went 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the opener. UIndy third baseman Kelsey Rummel (2 runs), right fielder Sydney Russell (run) and DeMotte all went 2-for-3 with a RBI in game one.

Lewis senior pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss for the Flyers in the opener. Habel (7-7) allowed nine runs - eight earned - and 12 hits in 4.2 innings of work, while striking out four batters.

In the nightcap, Lewis rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs on a RBI double from freshman first baseman Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and a RBI single by junior designated player Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) to take a 3-2 lead.

Munaco led the Flyers offensively, as she went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore third baseman Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Lewis tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as freshman Gianna Coduti (Melrose Park, Ill./Trinity) (Melrose Park, Ill./Trinity) scored from third base on a throwing error by UIndy catcher Cori Eckerle to extend the Flyers lead to 4-2. Eckerle's attempt to throw out Flyer center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) on an attempted stolen base sailed into center field.

UIndy had one last rally in them, as they scored one run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by DeMotte, cutting Lewis' lead to 4-3. The Greyhounds would load the bases with two outs, but Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) induced Krcelich into a game-ending flyout, securing the upset for the Flyers.

Bowler (9-4) earned the complete-game, six-hit victory for the Flyers, as she allowed three runs - two earned - and struck out four batters. DeMotte (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and freshman center fielder Casey Williamson (3-for-3) accounted for five of the Greyhounds' six hits.

"After losing the way we did in game one, it's a great achievement to beat Indianapolis in game two," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "I thought Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) pitched a wonderful game. Indianapolis has great hitters from one through nine. Kelly had to spot her ball and change her speeds and I thought she did a great job.

"It's going to feel really good tonight to think about how we beat a great team like Indianapolis."

DeMotte was the losing pitcher for the Greyhounds in the nightcap, as she allowed three runs and six hits in three innings of work.

Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 18), as they head to Kenosha, Wis., to square off with UW-Parkside for a 3 p.m. (CST) showdown.
