OWENSBORO, Ky. – Lewis baseball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday (April 14). The Flyers dropped the opener 21-11 before bouncing back with an 8-6 win in game two. Lewis was the home team in both contests as they were originally home games for the Flyers, but were moved to Kentucky due to threatening weather in the Romeoville area.
Lewis scored seven of their eight runs in game two in the second inning. It all started after the first two batters were put out. The next four batters singled. Senior
Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/DuPage) followed with a three-run home run, his fourth of the year. Sophomore
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) singled and then junior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) stepped the plate. He deposited the Kentucky Wesleyan offering over the fence for a two-run home run, also his fourth home run of the season.
Brauer had an RBI single in the sixth to knock in Lewis' eighth run of the game. Kentucky Wesleyan made it close with four unearned runs in the sixth.
Jon Wandling (2-4) took the loss for Kentucky Wesleyan. Senior
Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) threw a seven-inning complete game. Only two of the six runs he allowed were earned. Lahey struck out six while not recording a single walk. Lahey's record is now 3-2.
“Pat threw the ball exceptionally well and was really in control,” Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. “We swung the bats well all day but Andrew and Michael's home runs were a huge lift.”
Lewis used six runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-7 lead in game one. However a nine spot by the Panthers in the seventh put the game away. Albano had a three-run home run, his seventh of the season, in the fourth inning for Lewis. Sophomore
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) hit a solo home run for Lewis in the seventh. The homer was the first of his career. Buddle had three hits and three runs scored in the game. Albano finished with four RBI in the contest.
Junior
Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) took the loss for Lewis. He is now 4-3. Chaz Simpson earned the win for the Panthers in relief. His record is now 1-3.
“Game one was back and forth early but we couldn't get the shutdown inning on the mound,” McDonough said. “The nine run inning really took the life out of us.”
Kentucky Wesleyan is now 14-18 (8-10 GLVC). Lewis is 22-11 (12-6 GLVC).
The Flyers and Panthers will play again on Sunday. The GLVC doubleheader will start at noon.
