St. Louis, Mo. - The Lewis University softball team recovered from their rough weekend, as the Flyers snapped their four-game losing streak, behind the strength of freshman pitchers
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) with a 2-0, 6-2 non-conference doubleheader sweep of Maryville at Maryville Field on Tuesday (March 6) afternoon.
Brems (3-4) earned her first career, complete-game, shutout victory, as she allowed four hits and struck out seven batters. Bowler (2-2) went the distance, allowing two unearned runs and five hits, while fanning a season-high eight Maryville hitters.
"I hope these two wins will point us back in the right direction," Lewis head softball coach
George DiMatteo said. "I thought both Ali and Kelly pitched exceptionally well today. We played in some tough conditions today with winds blowing in from center field at around 30 to 40 miles-per-hour."
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 5-10 overall, while Maryville is now 1-9 on the campaign.
In the opener, the Flyers used a pair of two-out singles by junior right fielder
Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris) and sophomore left fielder
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) off of Maryville starting pitcher Julie Jouglard (0-5) to earn the 2-0 win.
Hanford went 2-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Flyers offensively. Lewis junior center fielder
Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior third baseman
Traci Freitag (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) collected a pair of base knocks.
Jouglard scattered eight hits and struck out two batters in the loss.
The nightcap was not the most defensive friendly, as both teams combined for 10 errors, which led to one earned run out of eight. The Flyers, however, made the most of the Saints' six miscues, as they scored five unearned runs in the win.
Hanford and Hefler each scored a pair of runs for the Flyers in game two, while Rourke and freshman second baseman
Frankie Rys (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) each went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Lewis freshman first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) added two hits in the game two victory.
Maryville starting pitcher Kelsey Kapitzke (1-2) took the loss for the Saints in game two, as she allowed three runs, one earned, and four hits in 1.1 innings of work, while fanning two batters.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (March 7), as they head across town to face Missouri-St. Louis for an 11 a.m. (CST) doubleheader.
