Indianapolis, Ind. -
There was no luck for the Lewis University softball team on St. Patrick's Day, as the Flyers ran into a buzzsaw, as the No. 6 Indianapolis Greyhounds earned the 8-0 (5 inn.), 8-4 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Flyers in their inaugural doubleheader at Baumgartner Field on Saturday (March 17) afternoon.

UIndy junior pitcher Jennifer DeMotte (14-1) earned both wins for the Greyhounds, including a perfect-game in game one. In the opener, DeMotte retired all 15 batters she faced, including three strikeouts, eight fly outs and four ground outs. She was not as effective in the nightcap, as she allowed four runs on 10 hits, while striking out four batters.

Game two saw the Flyers rally from a three-run deficit, but ended on a walk-off grand slam by UIndy freshman Samantha Krcelich to give the Greyhounds the win.

"Indianapolis is a great team who is certainly deserving of their national ranking," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "They're tremendously talented."

The sweep extends UIndy's winning streak to 16 games and improves their record to 20-1 overall and 8-0 in GLVC action. Lewis is now 10-13 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.

In the opener, UIndy freshman Casey Williamson went 3-for-4 with five RBI, including a pair of two-run doubles, and a run scored to lead the Greyhounds offensively.  The Greyhounds also received three hits from leadoff hitter Kelsey Rummel (3-for-4, 2 runs).

Lewis freshman pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took the loss for the Flyers in game one. Bowler (4-3) gave up eight runs, seven earned, nine hits and four walks in 4.2 innings pitched.

In the nightcap, DeMotte got the Greyhounds going early offensively, as she began a three-run first inning with a RBI single. The Greyhounds then drew a pair of bases-loaded walks from Lewis starting pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) to extend their advantage to 3-0.

Lewis, however, responded with three unanswered runs to even the score up at 3-apiece, following a RBI single from sophomore third baseman Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) in the fourth inning. The Flyers also received a pair of RBI singles from senior catcher Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and junior right fielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris) in the third inning.

UIndy broke that tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out, RBI single by Greyhounds first baseman Dakota Malayer to give them a 4-3 lead. That lead, however, was short lived as Lewis junior shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led off the seventh inning with a solo blast to even the score up at 4-apiece.

Williamson opened the bottom of the seventh with a triple and Brems issued back-to-back intentional walks to DeMotte and designated player Alexa Alfaro to load the bases with no outs. Krcelich then took a Brems' offering over the left field wall for the walk-off, grand slam.

Hanford and Vucsko (run) each went 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Flyers, while junior center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Brems (4-6) allowed eight runs, eight walks and seven hits in six innings of work.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 20), as the Flyers head to Rensselaer, Ind., to square off with Saint Joseph's for a 3 p.m.(CST) doubleheader.
