KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Lewis University baseball team opened the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference campaign on Saturday (March 17) with a split of a doubleheader at Rockhurst. The Flyers dropped the first contest 7-6 before winning the second 5-0.

Lewis led 3-0 in game one before Rockhurst scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Lewis grabbed the lead back on a three-run home run by freshman Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) in the eighth. The homer was the first of his career.

Senior Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) came in to pitch with two runners on in the eighth. He earned a groundout to end the threat however the ninth wasn't as kind to Hicks. He walked the first two batters in the ninth as Rockhurst pushed across two runs to win the game 7-6. Hicks took the loss to drop his record to 2-1.

Sophomore Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) earned a no decision after allowing five runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings.

Senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) had three hits and an RBI in game one.

“We didn't play our best game in game one but had an opportunity to win it,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “Hicks just didn't have it today and credit Rockhurst for taking advantage.”

They say momentum in baseball is tomorrow's starting pitcher. Senior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) showed how true that statement is by throwing a five-hit, five strikeout, seven inning complete game shutout in game two. The win moves his record to 2-0.

“What can you say about Pat, that's a great senior performance,” McDonough said. “That game was tight until we put four on the board late which was great to see because it gave us some breathing room and allowed us to relax.”

Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by junior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton). The four runs McDonough refers to came in the seventh thanks to four different Flyers recording an RBI. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) was the only Flyer to record two hits in the game. His single in the seventh knocked in the fifth and final run for Lewis.

Rockhurst is now 8-5 (1-1 GLVC). Lewis is now 7-3 (1-1 GLVC). The Flyers make their first ever visit to William Jewell on Sunday for a GLVC doubleheader at noon.
