ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Behind a 10-run performance in game one and a shutout from freshman pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) in game two the Lewis softball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from William Jewell on Sunday (March 11) morning at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers took the opener 10-2 (5 innings) and the second contest 2-0.

The Flyers opened up game one thanks to a four-run third inning that broke a 1-1 tie. The big hit in the frame came off the bat of junior Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris). Her one out bases loaded single drove in two runs. Senior Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and junior Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) also had an RBI in the frame.

“Lauren's hit was huge,” Lewis softball coach George DiMatteo said. “When she got that hit I think it relaxed the entire team. Hitting is contagious and Lauren's hit really got it going.”

The Flyers added four more runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) had a two RBI single in the inning. Thanks to also knocking in a run in the first, she finished the game with three RBI.

Freshman Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) picked up the win for Lewis to move her record to 4-5. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk. She fanned nine William Jewell batters. Rachel Hayden took the loss for William Jewell. Her record is now 2-3.

Lewis scored just two runs in game two, but they ended up only needing one thanks to a stellar outing from Bowler (4-2). The freshman allowed just two hits and two walks in the complete game performance. Bowler added seven strikeouts.

“Kelly kept hitters off balance using her rise ball and her change up,” DiMatteo said. “She was outstanding.”

The Cardinals' only serious threat came in the fifth when they put runners at first and a second with one out. A ground out moved the runners up a base, but Bowler left them there with a fly out to end the inning.

Lewis led from the get go thanks to a tally in the first. It all started with two outs. Junior Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) walked and moved to second when Moseley singled. Up came Hanford and just like she did in game one, came up with a big hit. Her two out singled scored Vucsko.

The Flyers added an insurance run in the sixth when Vucsko took the Lewis offense in her own hands with a home run to left center field. It was her first of the season.

“Michelle's home run was huge because the difference between a one run lead and a two run lead heading into the last inning is enormous,” DiMatteo said.

The Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the seventh. Maria Buckingham was the loser for the Cardinals. She is now 3-3.

“A winning team finds ways to win even in tight, high drama games,” DiMatteo said. “We did that in game two today.”

Thanks to sweeping William Jewell on Sunday and Rockhurst on Saturday the Flyers are now 10-11 (4-4 GLVC). Lewis has also won seven of their last eight games.

William Jewell falls to 8-7 (3-3 GLVC).

The Flyers hit the road on Saturday for a GLVC doubleheader at Indianapolis.
