Lewis Baseball Tops Notre Dame (Ohio) To Finish Spring Trip

Flyers earn sixth win of the season

The Flyers took care of business on Saturday by defeating Notre Dame (Ohio).
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Lewis baseball finished their annual spring trip on a high note thanks to a 5-2 non-conference victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday (March 10) afternoon.

Lewis got on the board fast with a pair of runs in the first. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) bunted to reach base by an infield hit. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. He would come around to score during the next play when sophomore Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) reached on an error. Buddle scored Lewis' second run on an RBI single by senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage).

It stayed 2-0 all the way until seventh when Notre Dame put a pair of runs on the board. The Flyers had to get out of a bases loaded no outs jam in the fifth though.

The Flyers took the lead for good with three runs in the ninth. Senior Mike Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) doubled to lead off the inning. He came around to score on a double by junior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park). Norwood scored from third on a wild pitch. Brauer recorded his second RBI of the day later in the inning to plate the third run.

Junior Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) started for Lewis. He went 6.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs to earn a no decision. He recorded eight strikeouts.

“Matt pitched well today,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said.

Senior Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) came in to pick up the win and move his record to 2-0. He gave up three hits in 1.2 innings.

Freshman Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched the ninth to pick up his first career save.

“Like the whole trip, today was a good team effort,” McDonough said. “This week was a nice start to the season.”

The Flyers improve to 6-2. Notre Dame (Ohio) falls to 6-9-1. Lewis opens conference play next week with a doubleheader at Rockhurst on March 17.
