Owensboro, Ky. - The Lewis University trio of
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield),
Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) and
Matt Toth (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) combined for 67 points as the Flyers upset No. 7 Kentucky Wesleyan, 82-74, for the Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Thursday (Feb. 9) night.
Jackson posted a game and career-high 26 points, while McClellan pitched in 22 points, including four three-pointers and a team-best six assists. Toth tied a career-high and team-season high with six three-pointers and finished with 19 points in the victory.
Lewis shot 52.0% (26-for-50) from the field and a blazing 55.0% (11-for-20) from three-point range. The Flyers, once again, were outstanding from the free throw line, knocking down 90.5% (19-for-21) of their charity tosses, including an 11-for-12 performance over the final six minutes of the contest. Over their last five games, Lewis is shooting 85.7% (84-for-98) from the free-throw line.
"This was a good win for us, because we found a way to make some plays tonight and I thought everyone contributed," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "We just have to keep believing in ourselves, because we're a good team and we've proven that we can compete with anyone in this conference."
The last time Lewis defeated a Top-10 opponent, came on January 31, 2009, as the Flyers edged No. 8 Bellarmine, 75-72, at Neil Carey Arena. With the win, Lewis improves to 14-8 overall and 6-8 in GLVC action, while the Panthers are now 18-4 on the campaign and 10-4 in conference play.
KWC senior guard Brandon Johnson led the Panthers with 25 points, while senior forward Marseilles Stewart added 12 points and junior Cornbread Walker collected 10 points. Lewis held the GLVC's leading scorer Anthony Young to 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting, after he had been averaging 20.8 points-per-game.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 11), as the Flyers head to Evansville, Ind., to square off with No. 14 Southern Indiana for a 3 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
