St. Cloud, Minn. - The Lewis University softball team was done in by the big inning for the second-straight game, as St. Cloud State scored five unanswered runs, including a four-run fourth inning, to earn the 9-5 non-conference victory over the visiting Flyers in the second day of Husky Dome Classic action on Saturday (Feb. 25) morning.
St. Cloud State's Mikayla Hogan and Megan Lehnen each connected for home runs against the Flyer pitchers. Hogan had a solo homer in the first inning, while Lehnen (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs) provided the decisive three-run homer off Flyer reliever
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) in the four-run fourth inning.
Husky second baseman Jackie Dooley went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while third baseman Jordan Grell had two hits and scored a run.
With the win, St. Cloud State improves to 5-1 on the campaign, while the Flyers fall to 2-5 on the season.
Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took the loss for the Flyers, Bowler (1-1) allowed six earned runs and five hits in three innings of work, while striking out four batters. Bowler issued five walks on Saturday, two of which came around to score.
Husky pitcher Alyssa Roberts (2-0) earned the win for St. Cloud State, as she tpssed four innings of scoreless relief, allowing four hits and striking out three batters.
Offensively, Lewis was led by outfielders
Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport). Hefler was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Rourke went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run. Moseley added a two-run double for the Flyers in the third inning.
Lewis returns to action at 2 p.m., as the Flyers take on Augustana (S.D.) in their final game of the day.
