Indianapolis, Ind. – Senior
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhard, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) led the Lewis University Women's Volleyball team past University of Missouri-St. Louis with a double-double in the 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 25-14, 20-25, 15-9) Lewis victory in the first round of the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Friday (Nov. 16).
The Flyers improve to 25-9 on the season while the Tritons finish with a 13-18 record. The squad posted 118 digs against UMSL, good for second all-time in Lewis program history.
“We had some mental breakdowns earlier in the match, maybe trying to coast,” Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. “In the fifth set, there was none of that.”
Krumwiede posted a double-double in the five-set thriller with 27 digs and 23 kills. She also had four blocks and three service aces. Sophomore setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) posted a season-high 54 assists while junior libero
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had a season-high 38 digs for the Flyers.
In the first set, the teams were knotted at 14-all when senior
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) held serve for the Flyers for four points to take the lead 17-15. Lewis scored on kills by Krumwiede and
Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township), an ace by Mitros and a Tritons' attack error.
With the momentum on the Flyers side, the squad took the first set 25-23.
The Flyers were unable to hold serve in the second set, which allowed UMSL to cut away Lewis' lead late in the set to win 27-25.
In the third set, Lewis jumped out to an early 8-4 lead as Mitros was able to hold serve for four Flyer points getting big blocks from Perschnick and Krumwiede. The Flyers continued to build on their lead to take the third set 25-14.
Down eight points in the fourth set, Lewis called an early time out to slow down UMSL enough to get within four points at 13-9. The Flyers were able to score on blocks by Barea, Perschnick and Krumwiede, but the Tritons were able to keep the Flyers at bay, winning 25-20 to force a fifth set.
At 4-4 in the fifth set, Mitros got a kill off of a pass from Barea to break UMSL's serve and then took serve to push Lewis' lead to 7-5. The Flyers were able to hold off the Tritons' advances to win the fifth set 15-9 and the match, 3-2.
“I think UMSL has a fantastic match,” Smith said. “They slowed us down and made us work for every point.”
Lewis will take on Missouri S&T, who defeated Southern Indiana, 3-0 in their first-round match, at 5 PM ET on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Indy South Sports Academy.
