ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 13 Lewis men's volleyball received a league-best three selections on the 2012 Preseason All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Team, announced Thursday by the MIVA.
Senior middle blocker
Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice), redshirt junior outside hitter
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and redshirt sophomore libero
Roberto Torres-Davis (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) picked up the preseason nods for the Flyers. The team is voted on by the league's seven head coaches.
Gallik was named an All-MIVA Second Team honoree for the second straight season in 2011. He averaged 2.07 kills and 1.09 blocks during his junior campaign of 2011. Petty was an All-MIVA First Team honoree last year. He was twice named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week. Torres-Davis was one of four players in the MIVA to average better than two digs per set.
“Having three selections is great for the three guys and the entire team,” head coach
Dan Friend said. “I think it shows the respect the league's coaches have for our returning core group.”
The league also released the 2012 Preseason Poll with the Flyers selected to finish third after earning 39 points.
Lewis opens the 2012 regular season on Saturday at 9 p.m. CT at No. 9 Pepperdine.
