St. Louis, Mo. - The three-ball proved to be the difference in Thursday (Jan. 5) night's Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up between Lewis University and Maryville, as the Saints connected on 14 three-pointers, including the game-winning trifecta from freshman forward Corey Washburn with 2.7 seconds remaining, to earn the 64-61 come-from-behind win over the Flyers.
As a team, Maryville went 14-for-33 from long-distance, and all five Saints' starters knocked down at least one three-pointer. Saints' sophomore guard Asa Toney scored a game-high 20 points and added four three-pointers, followed by 11 points from freshman guard Armon Provo (3 treys), and 10 points from junior guard Gerald Shaw (2 treys).
"We did not play well enough to win tonight," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "You have to give Maryville all the credit in the world, they made shots and we didn't.
"We have to find a way to win close games."
With the win, Maryville improves to 8-3 on the season and 2-2 in GLVC action, while the visiting Flyers are now 8-3 on the campaign and 0-3 in conference play.
Lewis guards
Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) and
David Bryant (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) topped the Flyers with 15 points apiece. Flyer senior forward
Lonnie Lawrence (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) tied a career-high with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
Bryant and Lawrence keyed another solid bench performance, as the Flyers' outscored Maryville's reserves, 34-12.
"I thought our bench was good again tonight," Trost said. "I thought both Lonnie (Lawrence) and David (Bryant) gave us good energy and effort out there."
The Flyers seemed in control of the contest, as they held a 57-50 lead over the Saints, following an 18-6 run, with 4:16 remaining in the game. During that stretch, McClellan (8 points) and Bryant (7 points) combined for 15 of Lewis' 18 points.
That's when Maryville would mount their comeback, as the Saints went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes, capped off with the go-ahead three-pointer by Provo with 1:13 remaining that would give MU the 61-59 advantage.
Lewis was unable to score on their next possession, giving Maryville the ball with 27 seconds left in the contest.. The Flyers, however, forced a Saints' turnover and McClellan hit a running jumper with 21 ticks left to even the score at 61-apiece.
Both teams would call a time-out with 13 seconds left, to set the stage for Washburn's heroics. The Flyers had a chance with 2.7 seconds left to tie it up, but a half-court heave by sophomore
Nick Valla (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist/Missouri State) narrowly missed, securing the win for the Saints.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 7), as the Flyers head across town to square off with Missouri-St. Louis for a 3 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
