ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from UW-Parkside on Wednesday afternoon at Brennan Field by scores of 8-2 and 14-2. Junior
Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) stole four bases and scored twice in game one. In game two he went 4-for-4 with two singles, two doubles and two RBI.
In game one, senior
Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) knocked in two runs and scored twice. Senior
Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) had two RBI and a run scored.
Lewis turned a 3-2 lead into an 8-2 final by scoring two in the seventh inning and three in the eighth. Lewis' first run of the game came in the third on a home run by sophomore
Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) to right field.
The Flyers offense didn't need to put many on the board thanks to the pitching of senior
Matt Zicher (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey/Triton). Zicher earned a complete game victory to move his record to 3-1. He allowed two runs on nine hits and three walks. He fanned four UW-Parkside batters and also picked off two Rangers on the base paths. The Lewis defense turned three doubles plays behind Zicher.
“Matt's complete game was huge,” head coach
Tim McDonough said. “That was a senior stepping up and really coming through.”
The Flyers earned an eight run victory in game two thanks mostly to an 11-run third inning in which Lewis recorded nine hits.
Freshman
Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished 2-of-2 with a home run, three RBI, three runs scored and a walk. Sophomore
Zach Stetson (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Junior
Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) started and earned a win to improve his record to 6-1. He went four innings, allowing three hits and a run. He struck out four Rangers.
The Lewis lineup out-hit the Rangers 28 to 13 on the day.
“All day we had a good approach at the plate,” McDonough said. “We played two clean games and had a high energy level.”
UW-Parkside falls to 6-15 (5-7 GLVC). Lewis improves to 15-8 (8-4 GLVC). The Flyers are at Saint Joseph's on Saturday and Sunday.
