Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University softball team got back on the winning track, as the Flyers led by a pair of complete-game victories from
Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and
Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) completed the 4-2, 7-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Drury at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday (Apr. 3) afternoon.
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 16-7 overall and 5-1 in GLVC action, while the Panthers are now 15-20 on the campaign and 5-8 in conference play.
In the opener, Lewis took advantage of Drury starting pitcher Caitlin Krebs' wildness, as the Panthers' hurler issued a pair of bases-loaded walks to sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler(Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and junior third baseman Traci Freitag (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) in the second inning.
The Flyers added another run in the frame on a squeeze bunt by freshman left fielder Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) to push Lewis ahead, 3-0.
Drury answered with a run in the next half inning to cut Lewis' lead to 3-1. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Lewis freshman designated player Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) uncorked a lead-off homer to extend the Flyers' lead to 4-1.
Pickrum won her sixth-straight game in as many appearances. Pickrum (7-1) went the distance and allowed two runs and four hits, while striking out three Panther batters.
Senior second baseman Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) led the Flyers offensively, as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the nightcap, the Flyers scored seven unanswered runs and never looked back. Lewis senior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI to propel the Flyers. Smith added a pair of RBI for the Flyers, while Hefler went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of stolen bases.
The Flyers were the beneficiaries of a few defensive lapses by Drury, as the Panthers committed three errors in game two, which led to three unearned runs.
Habel improved her record to 5-2 on the campaign. Habel allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits and fanned six batters to earn the complete-game victory.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 6), as the Flyers welcome Saint Joseph's for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
