ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball earned a pair of one-run victories over 25th ranked Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers won the opening game 2-1 and the nightcap 3-2 by scoring two runs with two outs in the sixth inning of the seven inning contest.
In game one, Indianapolis' scored their only run of the game in the first inning. Lewis tied it up with a run in the fourth inning. Freshman

Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) wasn't thrown out at home on Thomas' double a batter earlier.
It stayed 1-1 until the Flyers took the lead for good thanks to a fortuitous bounce in the sixth inning. Senior
Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) hit a two-out ground ball to third base. The ball bounced off the lip of the grass and over the third baseman's head into left field for an RBI single. Newsome scored from second on the play.
Freshman
Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was masterful for the Flyers. He went eight innings, allowing six hits and just an unearned run in the first inning. He struck out 10 Greyhounds. His 10th strikeout came to his final batter, fanning UIndy's Derek Locascio with two-outs and the bases loaded in the eighth. His record improves to 2-1.
“Tommy pitched like a veteran,” head coach
Tim McDonough said. “He really stepped up today and finished strong with the strikeout.”
Sophomore
Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) pitched the ninth to earn the save.
Following an Indianapolis run in the top of the first of game two, Lewis tied it up in the bottom half. Senior
Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) led off with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Bolling then scored on a one-out single by Brauer.
The Greyhounds grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Matt Maringer was hit by a pitch with two out. He then stole second. Maringer scored on a single to left field by Andrew Armour that tipped off the glove of a leaping
Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) at short.
The lead was short lived for UIndy as sophomore
Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) hit a no doubt home run to right field with two outs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior
Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) then worked a walk. He stole second and went to third on a wild throw by the catcher. Senior
Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) followed with a single through the left side to give Lewis the lead for good.
Frahm pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second save of the day and bring his save total to five.
“Matt is really establishing himself in the closing role,” McDonough said. “I think the guys feel the presence he has out there.”
Junior
Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) earned the victory for Lewis. His record is now 5-1. He went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He fanned four and walked none.
“Our pitching really set the tone today,” McDonough said.
Lewis pitchers walked just three batters in 16 innings.
“I think the difference today was we won the little battles today,” McDonough said. “Offensively we were patient and pushed both of their starters' pitch count.”
Indianapolis falls to 15-5 (6-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Lewis improves to 12-7 (5-3 GLVC). Lewis and Indianapolis play again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
