SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Lewis senior Kevin Coates (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) finished seventh and sophomore Brandon Drogemuller (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) was 14th in the 500 freestyle on Friday at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Nationals. Coates' swim earned him All-America honors. It's his ninth All-America or All-America Honorable Mention swim of his career, the most in Lewis men's swimming history.
At nationals, the top eight finishers earn All-America honors while the next eight are rewarded with All-America Honorable Mention accolades.
It is Coates' sixth All-America performance with three Honorable Mention swims. He passes Adam Brown for most overall national honors and Michael Lapustin for most All-America performances. On top of it all Coates' 4:30.43 time set a new school record. He now owns the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle records at Lewis.
Drogemuller touched the wall in 4:33.91 for Honorable Mention status. It's the first time in his career he's earned national accolades in the 500 freestyle. He now has four career national honors.
"It was great to see both of them score in the 500," head coach Steve Thompson said. "Typically, that is a difficult race for them at this level. It sets us up well for the 1650 tomorrow and I expect it will be an exciting and competitive field."
Both Coates and Drogemuller will wrap up the championships on Saturday in the 1650 freestyle.
After day three Lewis is in 21st place with 33 points.
