HANOVER PARK, Ill. - The Lewis women's tennis team opened up the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on a high note with an 8-1 victory over visiting Quincy on Friday (Mar. 25) evening at the Centre Court Athletic Club.
With the win, Lewis improves to 3-3 (1-0 GLVC) while Quincy drops to 1-3 (0-1 GLVC).
At No. 1 singles, freshman Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Pam Ganer and teamed up with classmate Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) at No. 1 doubles for an 8-4 win over Anele Novak and Lauren Henry.
Lanstiak defeated Allison Callahan, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Junior Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) defeated Novak, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) earned a 7-5, 6-0 win over Michelle Bertelsman at No. 4 singles and beat Bertelsman and Samantha Huelin 8-0 at No. 3 doubles with senior Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas).
Kessler claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bernadette Hayden and junior Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) defeated Henry 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
"The ladies played well today and we are slowly getting healthier each week," head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "The key for us is to get everyone back to 100%."
The Flyers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 25) evening against Saint Joseph's at 7:30 PM at College Park Athletic Club West in Lincolnshire.
