EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Senior Terran Wertz finished first among six Lewis runners and 30th overall at the 2007 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Cross Country Regional, held on the campus of Southern Illinois Edrwardsville Saturday morning. The Flyers came in 14th among 22 teams. Wertz covered the 6K course in 22:57.45, but came up short in her bid to qualify for the national championships. The top four teams and the top two individual finishers not on those teams earn an automatic trip to the championships. Wertz finished 13th fastest among runners eligible for an individual spot. Lewis' other runners included freshman Kathryn Hague in 56th (23:30.87), senior Kristin Johnson in 85th (24:02.73), senior Becky Herbert in 99th (24:18.60), senior Theresa Dexl in 107th (24:25.14) and freshman Hailey Justes in 123rd (25:08.44) among 153 runners. Grand Valley State won the regional in convincing fashion, outdistancing runner-up Wayne State 40-117. Wayne State junior Rachelle Malette won the individual title with a time of 21:12.33. UW-Parkside and Southern Indiana rounded out the top four. Seniors Julianne Hoekzema, of Northern Kentucky, and LeAnn Sarka, of Indianapolis, also advanced to the national meet. Hoekzema placed fifth overall in 21:41.96 while Sarka finished 11th in 22:06.76. |
