EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Senior Juliann Szablewski finished 17th among 96 runners Saturday to lead the Lewis University women to seventh place at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Cross Country Championship. Szablewski, who matched her career-best GLVC Championship performance, ran the 6,000-meter route in 23:23.77. Terran Wertz finished 20th in 23:30.38. Also competing for Lewis were Renee Koziol, 55th (24:38.63); Kristin Johnson, 56th (24:41.86); Theresa Dexl, 59th (24:49.24); and Amanda Hammond, 64th (25:08.36). While the Flyers didn't finish as high in the standings as they wanted, coach Rick Wemple still saw plenty of positives. "We wanted to beat SIU Edwardsville, a team that beat us by 19 points in a race on this same course a couple of weeks ago, and we did that today," Wemple said. "Terran had a tough day, but everyone else stepped up and ran as fast or faster than they ran here two weeks ago. It was a true team effort. "Our women have practiced and competed with a lot of fire all season," Wemple added. "We didn't quite get to where we wanted to be today, but that certainly wasn't due to a lack of desire." |
