EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Five of Lewis University's six runners clocked faster times than they did a week ago, and the Flyers finished 15th among 29 teams Saturday at the Border War Cross Country Championship. Terran Wertz led the way, placing 21st in the 294-runner field and covering the 5,000-meter route in 18:51.24. The course is the same one on which the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship will be contested Oct. 21. Juliann Szablewski continued her solid work, finishing 57th in 19:23.18. Renee Koziol placed 134th (20:34.22), Theresa Dexl finished 140th (20:39.96), Kristin Johnson was 169th (21:00.73) and Amanda Hammond placed 184th (21:15.28). "I couldn't be happier with the way our athletes performed," head coach Rick Wemple said. "They were better than they were last week, and this course definitely was tougher. "We came into this season wanting to finish at least in the middle of the pack in every race. We're realizing that goal because everyone on the team is competing hard." |
