Louisville, Ky. - Lewis University head women's cross country coach Dana Schwarting had a plan when he entered his squad into the 2009 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Gold race, as the field featured several Division I squads on a course that will be the host to the Great Lakes Valley Conference championships in three weeks.

The Flyers did not disappoint as junior Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi) placed 33rd out of 291 runners to help Lewis to a 24th-place finish out of 35 squads, at Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday morning. Lewis, who totaled 646 points, owned the sixth-best score out of any Division II teams in the race.

"This was a very deep field that I could compare to Nationals," Schwarting said. "We ran really well today and had a lot of PR's in some muddy and swampy conditions. We beat a few teams that are ahead of us in the regional rankings and I thought we competed really well."

Purdue won the overall title with 88 points, followed by Kentucky (130), Louisville (141), Missouri (173) and Western Kentucky (173).

Lewis sophomore Amanda Porter (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley/Shawnee State) was the Flyers' second fastest runner with a time of 18:46.58. Porter was followed by freshman Amy Clawson (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) who crossed the finish line in 19:23.17. Sophomore Julie Jarrett (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) was the fourth-fastest Flyer with a time of 20:45.90, while freshman Genevieve McBride (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) rounded out the scoring with a time of 20:56.82.

Lewis returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 10), as they will race at the Lucian Rosa Open, hosted by UW-Parkside, at 11:30 a.m.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
