Falcon Heights, Minn. - Paced by two top-25 finishes from sophomore Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi Academy) and senior Becky Herbert (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) the Lewis University women's cross country squad placed 15th overall in the Maroon Division II race of the highly prestigious Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday.

 

Hague placed 16th overall, crossing the finish line in 23:22, while Herbert was 25th with a time of 23:50. Lewis freshman Ashley Lucas (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) finished 108th with a time of 25:51. Julie Jarrett (Champaign, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) claimed 140th with a time of 27:00, followed six seconds later by senior Nicole Koutzas (Elmwood Park, Ill.) for 142nd place. Sophomore Hailey Justes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) rounded out the Flyer runners with a 145th place mark of 27:24.

 

Augustana won the overall race with 54 points, followed by Pittsburg State (129), Minnesota State Mankato (160), Minnesota-Duluth (161), Black Hills State (167), Southwest Baptist (160), Concordia Nebraska (197), Minnesota State Moorhead (211), Indiana Wesleyan (214), Manitoba (240), Winona State (303), Northern Michigan (335), Nebraska-Kearney (374), Michigan Tech (411), Lewis (431), Lake Superior State (433), UW-Stouts (457), Grand View (467), Northern State (495), Drury (518), St. Cloud State (530), Concordia St. Paul (571), Minot State (647) and Huntington (694).

 

Drury won the Maroon Division II men's race with 109 points, followed by Pittsburg State (120), Minnesota State Mankato (128), Southwest Baptist (133), Concordia Nebraska (144), Augustana (152), Huntington (185), Black Hills State (239), Indiana Wesleyan (249), Michigan Tech (257), Northwest Missouri State (288), Minnesota-Duluth (301), Manitoba (305), Nebraska-Kearney (322), Northern State (355), St. Cloud State (436), Minnesota State Moorhead (437), Lewis (462), Minot State (621), Grand View (625), Lake Superior State (630) and Winona State (635).

 

Lewis senior Patrick Walsh (Harwood Heights, Ill.) led the Flyers with a 72nd place finish of 27:22. Walsh was followed by freshman Scott Tanis (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) who was 86th overall, crossing the finish line in 27:35. Freshman Rocky Medero (River Grove, Ill./Guerin Prep) was 93rd (27:51), while senior Kevin Dockemeyer (Wilmington, Ill./Reed-Custer) and Jeff Ritzema (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) tied with a mark of 28:10. Freshmen Ross Goers (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) finished 120th (28:42), followed by classmate John Deutsch (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) who placed 132nd (29:34).

Lewis is back in action on Saturday, October 11th, as both teams will participate in the Border Wars, hosted by SIU-Edwardsville.
