Volleyball to Face Indianapolis in GLVC First Round

Nov. 8, 2004

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-- - The Lewis University women's volleyball team has earned the fifth seed and will play No. 4-seed Indianapolis in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Evansville, Ind.

The Flyers (18-9, 10-6 GLVC) will play the Greyhounds (22-12, 12-4 GLVC) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The match will follow the tournament opener that pits No. 3 Northern Kentucky vs. No. 6 Saint Joseph's.

Second-round matches will be played Friday, Nov. 12. The winner of Lewis' match will advance to play tournament host and No. 1 seed Southern Indiana at 7:30 p.m., while the NKU/SJC winner will play No. 2 SIU Edwardsville at 5 p.m.

The Flyers lost to Indianapolis in their previous meeting this season; Indy won at home 30-27, 30-16, 30-26. At the time, the loss dropped Lewis to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in the GLVC. However, the team responded to close the season 11-3 in its final 14 matches and 10-3 in league play.

Indianapolis' Shaun McAllister, a senior outside hitter, tallied 19 kills and had just one hitting error in 35 attempts for a .514 hitting percentage in the first meeting with Lewis.

Lewis' Theresa Nugent countered McAllister with 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage, but the Flyers combined to hit .142 as a team, while Indianapolis posted a .274 hitting percentage.

Jessica Lockhart added nine kills and 13 digs, while setter Andrea Morrone passed out 27 assists and had 10 digs. Libero Maggie Haen recorded a match-high 18 digs.

Haen has 451 digs this season and needs five to break Lewis' single-season record of 455 set by Colleen Quinlan in 1995.

If the Flyers advance to the second round, Lewis was the only team to beat Southern Indiana (21-6, 15-1 GLVC) in GLVC play this season. Lewis beat USI 30-22, 28-30, 30-28, 30-20 in Romeoville.
