HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The No. 13 Flyers topped rival Northern Kentucky 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon in a road Great Lakes Valley Conference match. The win marked the Flyers' 15 straight victory, three short of the school record set last season. The Flyers have lost only six sets during the recent streak.

Lewis held a convincing 12-6 edge in blocks, including six in the first set. The Flyers out-hit the Norse .235 to .105 for the match and kept the Norse's hitting percentage below .000 for most of the contest.

The Flyers trailed by one in the fourth set when they rattled off four straight points to take an 11-8 lead and forced Northern Kentucky to ask for time. The Norse chipped at the lead and were within one at 14-13 when the Flyers went on a 5-1 run that put the match away.

"We had energy right from the first serve," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "We blocked really well especially in the first set but if our block didn't get it we had amazing hustle plays in the backcourt to keep the ball alive."

Senior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) had double-digit kills for the fifth straight match, recording 16 with just one error and a .441 attack percentage. She finished a dig short of consecutive double-doubles with nine.

Defensively, junior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) and senior Ashlee Lindish (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) each recorded 16 digs. Senior Sara deBuhr (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) added 10 kills and six blocks (two solos). Sophomore Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence) hit .429 with seven kills and three blocks (one solo).

The win puts the Flyers at 18-3 and a perfect 8-0 in GLVC play. Lewis will be the No. 1 seed for the GLVC in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover next Friday and Saturday in Lansing, Mich. As the top seed the Flyers will face three of the top clubs in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with key region wins on the line. The schedule for the crossover will be announced on Sunday.

"I think this was a good one to play right before the crossover," Smith said. "It was a great win. We'll need to bring this much energy next weekend."

Northern Kentucky falls to 15-7 (6-2 GLVC).

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit www.lewisu.edu.
