ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University women's volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw in its match against conference foe SIU Edwardsville. The Flyers (11-6, 4-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) lost their first GLVC home game of the year in a three-set 30-24, 30-21, 30-16 defeat. SIUE (15-5, 5-2 GLVC) entered the match fourth in the conference, but tied for sixth in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region. The Cougars clicked on offense for most of the match, finishing with a .278 hitting percentage, while Lewis was held to a .115 mark. Game 1 was tight throughout until a late burst by SIUE closed the game. Lewis led 24-23 before SIUE rattled off seven straight points. In game 2, Lewis drew within three points at 18-15, but SIUE outscored the Flyers 12-6 for the rest of the game. Lewis was led by Theresa Nugent's 11 kills. Andrea Morrone had 23 digs and Becca Lisle posted six blocks. Heather Bonde paced SIUE with a match-high 16 kills. Tina Talsma added 12 kills and a team-high four blocks. Setter Krystal Majernik handed out 45 assists. Lewis will next play Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 7. |
